When I first met Inari, I could only describe it as an accident, but she would call it fate. I was visiting a friend in Japan who told me of an abandoned shrine to a once prominent Kami, one who represented many things including worldly success. My curiosity was peaked and I went to explore this shrine in hopes of learning about said Kami. I did not expect to run into her, however. I did not know it was her at first, I just assumed it was another lost soul who had come out of curiosity or to pray to this long-forgotten figure. She told me the lives of the people who gave thanks to the Kami had changed, instead of seeking growth or obtaining some sort of prosperity, their lives were now lived day to day, simply surviving from the harsh reality of life. This lack of worship as she called it had weakened the Kami who now sought to leave her shrine, abandoned by modernity. Not realizing what this would eventually mean, I offered her a chance to see my homeland, in hopes that she would get some sort of solace out of traveling as I had. I do not see this action as a mistake, now having a Goddess as a companion, but I wonder what it means to have taken something of importance from a land that seemed to desperately need her.
