I worked at twice this. But I try to keep it so I can see the whole thing at once, which with my laptop screen means I don't zoom much past 50-60% anyway except to do details.

Uhm, I taught myself with books and internet forums. Hung out a lot of conceptart.org and sijun before they went quiet. Nowadays I work with other artists so I get a lot of help from them :)
