A character I designed for a game of Dungeons and Dragons I was invited to! Really excited to be playing her!
I may draw more of her too!

Gosh okay. Uhm... putting my thoughts together is hard!
A lot of the times the species I choose are just for fun, whatever makes me happy you know. But I also like to think about what that species could possibly represent, or be fun to use for.
Like winged characters always offer such interesting silhouettes.
usually when I have designed a character I kinda just let whatever vibe take me.
The outfits are almost entirely personality based. I think about what the character is gonna be like, and even if its all surface level you can really think of a lotta stuff that comes after.
In Noire's instance, she's from the feywild so though her name in french literally just means "black" I opted for darker colours, while trying to maintain what you would expect in being a little more colourful than I would do regular clothes.
She is again fey and while mechanically in game it probably wouldn't mean anything I still didn't draw her with any iron on the outfit, instead its brass fixtures and silver trim.
The most fey thing easily being some of the texture on her shawl, I wanted it to evoke that of a book because of who her patron is. same with the fabric hanging from her belt. I wanted that to feel like the spine of a book!
The colours of the body and the armour were chosen for how they contrast against one another. Blues look really good with some reds hanging around. So I mostly tweak things like that to find the right balance. I actually use a website called coolors.co for help with some colour ideas. you just add a / at the end of the regular link with the hex code for the colour you are looking at and it will give you a bunch of stuff relating to palette, what colours are where against it on the colour wheel, the shades, and even a rough simulation for how colour
blindness effects the colour.
Other stuff for the armour was mostly, bird folk wouldn't want super restricted arms or legs, for flight reasons. And figuring out how that would look.
Often I just run an idea past some folks to see what they think.
Going with a previous upload, Nessa:
- her base fur pattern
- what clothes she would wear
Ambivian commoners have dull muted tones for the fur, so I went with a striking pattern on her body.
Cis femals have hair and Cis Men do not. So how would that effect hair types, I wanted her hair to be natural so I gave her shorter hair. BUT I wanted some parts of her to stand out. Redish hair only felt right. And honestly I just really wanted green eyes. Which... Goes really well with red!
SO I continued the red theme with the coveralls. Most sets of coveralls/ jumpsuits are solid colours. But this is scifi, and honestly one of the easiest ways to evoke that is strange clothes patterns. The red was actually me thinking of Star Trek, But I didn't want it to give TOO much star trek, so I added the red stripes around the legs and the reflective stripes because she would be in and around spaceships.
Ultimately she was an excuse to put a woman in a jumpsuit so it could be tied around her waist with just a bra underneath because thats peak in being both hot and in gender.
So... it varies! What I can suggest is putting together moodboards and outfit ideas. Species stuff. Again with Noire I actually put together a moodboard of, first. Owls that other furries drew, so I knew what shapes I wanted to work with. And then I found outfits that had elements I liked, even if they just had ONE aspect I liked. It was nice to have it to reference back to!
Maybe I'll throw together a character to show what I do... or maybe this was enough! Idk. If you have specifics? I don't know if this was helpful or too rambly!

thanks so much !! this is super helpful.
things like, an avian character not wanting to be restricted with their armor might seem obvious but it's one of those things i wouldn't have thought of. i'll try to focus on the smaller things like that more, i feel like it'll be a big help! thank you!
