Argiope aurantia, also known as the Corn Spider or Black and Yellow Garden Spider. It's a member of the orb weaver family. This is clearly a female. They are harmless to humans, but that doesn't make them any less creepy looking.
Getting this photo was a real pain in the ass. It's so humid outside right now that my camera fogged up instantly and I had to leave it outside for a while to acclimate. And when the lens finally cleared up, a thunderstorm hit and it started raining hard. Luckily the spider was under cover next to the back door, so I didn't get soaked.

Haha! I have this one memory of these spiders while growing up in Florida. One of my friends and I just finished a massive water balloon fight and we were curious what the spider would do if it got a bit of busted balloon in its web. So we tossed a small piece in and watched as the spider used its tiny fangs to take a test bite of it... then it turned it to the other side and did the same thing there. Once it realized balloons were not edible, it relesed it from its web and dropped it to the ground. The spider seemed so dignified through the entire process. It was awesome! =3
