Hello, it's me. I'm the Linux guy.

Nah, this is about as short form as this discussion ever gets.

ALL options are bad in different ways.

I am best off staying with the bad option I know how to make myself sufficiently comfortable with compared to a bad option that someone else demands.

Linux and Mac feels like a cultm Windows used to be cool... I miss the WinXP days, stuff worked great and looked good... because we were promsied a clean glass bubble future then...

I dread the day I'll have to put up with Windows 11's BS when I finally save up enough for a new PC next year.

I have been moving the same sold state drive between computers for a while. My hope is to wait out the worst of 11 or bypass it entirely like i did with vista and 8.

That's an Idea, but I don't have a choice on the matter due to a PC store's botched cloning I had to fix piece by peice myself and did all I could, still have Issues. :(

I suppose my situation is unusual! I have thankfully been able to manage technical matters myself up to now; i do not trust any computer joint to take this and actually fix it after bad experiences a long time ago back when I shared family computers. And they still charge money even when they fail!

Put it this way: if a corporation is forcing users to do something, it's never going to be for the sake of the user.

The fact that they are force-updating people from Windows 10 to Windows 11 seriously makes me want to dry-heave.

are they? admittedly the exchanges this was based on occurred months ago and i have already installed 10. I did check on 11 at one point and it told me that my computer did not support 11 and implied that i should "trade in or recycle" the thing on account of that!

Wow. They're just straight-up telling people to throw away their perfectly functional computers now? That is all kinds of messed up.

it would be in line with Jeff Bezos' apparent belief that anybody who owns their own computer will be seen as quaint and antiquated once companies like amazon start pushing us to rent computing from them, which they would of course control and perpetually charge for. Presumably other artificial intelligence pushers think the same and want to ingrain this idea of "you're too dumb to be trusted with this." Or in microsoft's case continue ingraining that idea, and ingraining it harder. I had a problem with that even back when Internet Explorer started replacing website error messages with its own obnoxious "this website cannot be displayed" generic all purpose condescending error page.

My computer came with 11 and I doubt I could get linux working without outside help.

I am sure there are people who will gladly charge you to mess with what system you have.

If you want help I'm willing to walk you through the steps of some of the more newbie friendly distros. First thing would be asking how you use your computer (if you game, type of work, update preferences, layout preferences), what your hardware actually is, and we can go from there. I'm happy to give simplified explanations of some of the popular options.

I moved to Linux full time back in 2019 because I got fed up with Microsoft's bullshit. I love technology I'm not a programmer or anything crazy, I'm just sick of the bullshit. There's a learning curve to using an entirely different operating system, but once you get past it, it's genuinely so much better. I feel like I actually own my PC. Open source technology is wonderful.

it is bad to hassle other people about what they use without knowing why they use it! If you do not behave like that then this comic strip probably has no gripe with you.

Naah, in all seriousness I was only ever concerned with helping people make what they had work. The Windows 7 and later 10 deprecation is only really a big issue in enterprise environments. The only time it was an issue on a personal user's machine was strict compatibility issues with school requirements (I work at a university) and if the customer was overly concerned about security. I'm just glad I'm out of the service desk side of things now... I'd have a hard time suggesting ANYONE use WinBLOWS 11 with all the AI crap, though I'd still keep my mouth shut and do my job.

I feel like this but on Windows 10, which I doubt is feeling all that much pressure compared to 7, s'weird how it seems to be every other Windows version that's solid enough (XP, 7, 10) - love the style in this one 🙏!

I am using ten now! I would not have had even this level of confidence in such a comic strip otherwise. Once I disabled the newer annoying features it is STILL bloatier than seven and the few programs I wanted to get updates from really aren't much different but I like being able to see that for myself.

I don't know who blue frog is. For me, as a tech support guy, upgrading to 11 makes the job harder. Cause like Microsoft hides all the tech support stuff and put in all kinds of crappy half assed automation.

Didn't know there was a special version of Firefox just for Win7.

It is called "extended support release" and I do not think if it is exclusively for windows 7 since the primary pest who inspired this comic strip only found me when i posted a comment about the ESR firefox, saying that HE used it and that I must have missed a version and i "should" upgrade, but supposedly this firefox is or was only going to be maintained until March 2026.

People are angry about things I say or think sometimes. These are "them" problems and not "you" problems.

I've tried Linux but from my standpoint you need to have a more nuanced understanding of how computers work to use it effectively and I wish linux people understood that not everyone has that kind of brain

I have used linux before, and I simply elect not to use it now, DESPITE all the nonsense microsoft pulls incessantly. But my complaint is similar to yours; issuing a recommendation that turns into a demand that does not take the demandee's needs or desires into consideration is not reasonable behavior. The foremost inspiration here told me outright that i HAD to use windows 11, linux or "a mac" like I am merely some dorfus at best buy who has never owned a computer before or doesn't have a particular setup that is efficient and pleasant for me or any longterm projects going on and desperately desire for a supposed expert to appear to tell me what to do.
