A multi post break down of a recent post here it's gonna be pretty technical, a little dry, but lightweight. It just goes over my process with some tips. (there might be grammar error's I usually don't type this much)
If you're not familiar with Blender or Upbge here's a stockpile of youtubers I learned from about Upbge and Blender in general.
Blender Guru (the quintessential blender teacher, but check his oldest video's for context)
John Hamilton (good material shader tutorials)
ThaTimster (good tutorials and a resource for GLSL shaders)

Parenting the mesh to the armature with Automatic Weights usually produces clean results in the torso and limbs.
Normally the head and face of any character needs alot of weight painting to ensure the pose doesn't move an
eyebrow when an ear moves, or have the head cave in when posing a jaw bone or an eye bone.
The only things that can make weight painting easier is a low-poly mesh or a clean mesh with no overlapping parts like clothes.
There are easy buttons sprinkled in like keeping the Mirror Modifier on during this phase, and using seams to help with
linked selecting as well as selecting edgeloops. Bear in mind the Mirror Modifier cannot be applied if
you do Shape Keys while it's active. Overall it's a tedious process of paint and pose to see if it looks ok while putting your
character through virtual yoga classes. I personally make sure to clear vertex groups of a mesh after unparenting
it from the Armature to keep it clean when I want to backtrack out of the weight painting phase into modeling.
