Wild Cards: Jack and Ace, Part 16
At the sight, the coyote helped the wolf up, and both of them ran away.
Like predators usually hunt, Lightshow and Frostbite chased after them. Cold wind and a volley of fireballs were nipping the crooks’ ankles at every turn. They ran away from wailing sirens and through the backstreets. Lightshow darted ahead as they were turning a familiar corner, she had fiery fountains between her fingers, ready to light them like her flaming knuckledusters. She reached the corner, then her eyes went wide.
Stopping in her tracks, Frostbite rushed the corner. “Frost wait!”
The man turned around the corner, and was met with a pipe wrench to his head, glass cracked and the mask partially came off. Frostbite held onto the wall, and grabbed his mouth. His breath was scratchy and painful.
The coyote who hit him was looming over him, readying another swing, then lightshow rushed up with fountains spewing flames like fire daggers between her knuckles. The coyote backed off, and ran to catch up with the wolf.
Lightshow didn’t chase him though, she turned to his friend who had been hit. He was still struggling to breath, and trying something with his mask. The breather had a tube connector partially torn. Lightshow didn’t think twice about it, she looked at her junky equipment and tore off some of the duct tape. She did what she could to fit the tube back in place, then Frostbite took a deep breath through it.
Frostbite huffed and wheezed a bit more as he regained his composure. With one lens partially broken, he looked at Lightshow. “Thank you.”
Lightshow just looked at him for a bit longer, tilting her head as something came to mind. “Isaac? Is that you there?”
“Uh…” Frostbite hesitated, “No?”
“It totally is!” Lightshow said, “Who else has a condition so rare you need to live on cold air!?”
“Dang it!” Frostbite said, his ears lowering “Fine it’s me, but you can’t tell anyone about this, please. My Aunt would freak out, and my uncle would be more grumpy than he already is.”
“Hey, your secret is safe with me.” Lightshow said, “I wouldn’t rat out my only friend.”
“Only friend.” Isaac thought about this for under a minute, “Elisa?”
It was at that moment, she knew, she messed up. “F###!”
“You’re Lightshow!?” Isaac said, “How is that even-”
“Let’s not talk about it here,” Lightshow said, “Police can’t be far and we’re still in costumes.
No other words were spoken, they started running again until they found a more distant place to change outfits.
