In this story, I enjoy some gossip, Telaroth finds some drugs and Edge has breakfast
Part I: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/63731889/
As usual story is pasted below!
Snr Captain Tano’rath
Cmdr, DES Defiant
I sent an update to Admiral Hector and he was predictably less than happy about it. I did tell him about our plans and he told us to gather more evidence and if it was an intelligence issue, then I was to hand it off to the I.I.S. Of course, he found that it was pretty scummy just like me, but it is what it is.
Telaroth was nice enough to volunteer as bait, though I suspected that was because he wanted to go hunting for evidence too, which is fine. Besides, out of the lot of us here, he’s the least likely to be hurt by anything, so no complaints there.
The rest of the team was busy at work making up a trap to catch one of the local large lizards while I was sifting through the remaining reports for the day, finding more evidence of outright tampering rather than factory defects. It seemed that whoever was doing this was getting increasingly brazen too, with the cuts being left mostly clean while the older fare actually had dirt slapped back over them and such.
The monotony of going through the reports was only broken when Telaroth came sauntering back into the office. He didn’t knock, but well, I had left the door open. “Captain, about this capture mission…”
“Yeah, if you see something and need to go, just go,” I replied with a snort, “just leave us a ping or something and we’ll know.”
“I…how’d you know I was going to talk about that?” The agent replied as he cocked his head slightly, “Has Telricktus spoken with you?”
“No, but you volunteered as bait and that puts you at the head of the spear, so that logically puts you in the best position to jump whoever it is before they see the rest of us, not a big leap,” I replied with a shrug as I sipped my tea, “I know you can’t actually get hurt by most things, but it still hurts and enough shots from an energy gun will still kill you.”
Telaroth himself chuckled and nodded as he dragged a chair over, “No, you got me there. That’s why you sit where you sit, but I figured that while we wait, perhaps we can have some tea.”
“Don’t see why not, I’ll just finish up here, bear with me,” I replied with another nod as I poked at the computer, “you lot did find a lot of shit and all of it reeks.”
“Yeah, tell me about it. No power tools looked to have been used, but loosened bolts and cut wires don’t necessitate those,” Telaroth replied with a shrug, “Nothing too fancy and honestly, if we didn’t look too close, they might have gotten away too. They did start out pretty good, but they really got sloppy recently.”
“Yeah, definitely. Tool marks on paintwork, cuts that are way to clean and all that,” I replied with a snort as I finished signing off the last report, “Just tell me what you find, yeah?”
“I will if I can,” Telaroth replied with a nod while I dug through my bag and pulled out two plastic mugs and an insulated bottle full of cold tea, “you know how those things go.”
“Yup, you’ll tell me or I’ll see it in the news,” I replied with a snort as I flicked my tail and started pouring the tea, “Anyway, what’s the latest and greatest?”

Of course he wanted the latest gossip, but well, everyone likes gossip. We ended up basically being middle-aged aunties for an hour and discussing the latest scuttlebutt over tea. For me, it also gave me time to go through the data I had while for Tano’rath, he seemed to be happy not to be working for once. I really don’t know how these Fleet types do it…
Eventually, though, the time came for us to go and get ready. Tano’rath excused himself to go and get into his armour while I simply walked into the bathroom and had my nanites manifest a set before walking out after the requisite amount of time.
Tano’rath, who obviously took his time, came strolling out after a while, checking his sidearm as he walked over, “The others are heading to the rally point, we should go soon.”
“Is there anything that I should be worried about?” I replied as I headed towards the door.
Tano’rath snorted and shook his head, “We don’t know what to expect, honestly, could be nothing and this while thing is because the wildlife doesn’t like the colonists, or it could be something nasty.”
“If it is that something more, I’ll ping you,” I replied with a nod, “How uh certain are you about this?”
“Well, most of it stinks and I don’t like it, but we need that smoking gun, so to speak,” The captain replied flatly as we walked to the rally point, “Find it or don’t, we need an answer here.”
I nodded as we joined the rest of the away party and got ready. They all had rifles, even Tano’rath who was handed one, but I declined. Can’t leave a gun sitting around for people to find. They didn’t like it, but well, once they saw my unit patch, the arguments died on their lips.
Either way, with Tano’rath leading his troops, we headed into the forest that bordered the colony.
Snr Captain Tano’rath
Cmdr, DES Defiant
I had everyone gathered and after the usual checks, we set off towards the colony gate. Of course, I expected things to be quiet given what I had been told about the situation, but well, the place had turned into a ghost town.
Pretty much all the curtains and blinds had been drawn and there was nobody about other than the single guard patrolling the deserted streets who nodded at us as we went past. All we heard other than the humming of the various air conditioning units were the rustling of leaves in the evening wind. At least the street lights worked, though and we had no trouble finding our way to the gate.
While it would’ve been easier for us to open the gates and just drive out in one of our vehicles, the noise would probably still scare the animals off, aggressive or not. So, we exited through the little pedestrian gate next to the main one, making sure to shut and lock it behind us. We checked comms once again before heading down the road and towards the vegetation.
Of course, the area around the main road leading to the landing pad was mostly clear, with the bush thickening as we strayed further off the path. As we walked, I double checked my comms unit to make sure we still had an uplink to the ship – just in case we all got lost or something, though Edge is usually pretty good with mapping areas.
There wasn’t much to say as we walked through the thickening vegetation. Too much noise would probably spook any potential specimens and that was on top of us bumbling around the undergrowth. To be fair, though, we were mostly keeping low and avoiding making too much noise, sweeping our torches around to look for a target.
It was one of those temperate forests, currently nice and lush thanks to a wet spring. Of course, that also meant that everything was more than a bit humid and sticky – which I don’t like, but well, this is why I never signed up for ground forces, yet here I am.
Surprisingly, though, it didn’t take long before Edge’s torch lit up a pair of slit-pupiled eyes. He barely had time to point before the creature lunged with a snarl, revealing itself as some sort of big cat, with claws extended and mouth open, revealing a more than nasty set of fangs. With a shout, we split, diving out of the way before Arktak managed to get a shot off, knocking the creature out before it could lunge again.
I couldn’t help but frown as we picked ourselves up and I removed a few leaves from my armour, “That doesn’t seem right.”
“I have the files for the local wildlife here, this is a Kalan beast,” Edge replied as he dug in his pouches for a blood sample kit, “they’re supposed to be docile, scared of strangers, not overly aggressive…like this.”
“Yeah, sample it,” I replied with a snort, “run a scan over it and see if there are any implants as well, this stinks.”
Edge nodded as he prodded at the creature with the auto-syringe, taking a composite blood sample while Arktak ran a scanner over the body. I turned round, meaning to ask Telaroth to have a look, but as I did, I received a ping saying that he’d left. Something about having found a chunk of meat that was full of pheromones and drugs close by.
“He’s gone, hasn’t he?” Revelation remarked as he glanced around, “I’m sure I saw him slink away at some point at the edge of my vision but I’m not sure when. He’s good.”
“Yeah. He found additional evidence, grab a bag, lets go retrieve it and go back for the night.” I replied with a nod as I flicked my tail, “I think that’ll be our smoking gun if anything.”
The rest nodded as we finished up our sample taking. With the directions that Telaroth had left me, we soon located the half-eaten meat and bagged that as evidence for analysis too. With that done, we headed back, with Edge going straight to the hospital to get all the testing done while the rest of us turned in for the night…

While the others scattered, I did the same, but as they got up, I instead slipped away, with my sensors flagging a half-eaten morsel of meat not too far from where the creature was. After poking at it and finding the most undeniable evidence of meddling so far in the form of half a pill of goodness knows what that plopped out of the food, I flagged the coordinates and got ready to show it to the Captain after taking a few photos.
These people really lack any form of finesse. Disgraceful.
I was actually about to turn around and go back when I noticed a faint set of tracks that were definitely not from a wild animal – unless wild animals have started wearing shoes recently. So much for a good nights sleep. I ended up pinging the Captain with the location of the meat and turning my attention to the shoeprints. Wasn’t hard to trace after I found the first few, even if some effort had been made to hide them. By the time the main group found the meat, I was well on my way already.
Tano’rath thanked me for the tip off and asked if he’d need to tone the investigation down, I told him no. I would need whoever these people are to extract so that I can get deeper, so it’s best to keep everything going. Besides, appearances have to be kept up anyway, it would be just as suspicious if our side eased off abruptly, especially after a find like that…
As I slunk my way through the undergrowth, the tracks became fresher, easier too. Whoever trained this person is actually incompetent – throwing leaves and bits of dirt over your shoeprints or bootprints, whatever, doesn’t hide anything. But then again, I suppose this is enough if the colonists are too scared to even come close to the treeline. Too bad I’m not.
Eventually, though, I came across a little clearing where a dying fire crackled, with the lone form of one of the Alliance lizard people sitting by it, gnawing on what looked like a stick of jerky…
Snr Captain Tano’rath
Cmdr, DES Defiant
While I wanted just as much as the others to see what the results were, the day spent wading through complaints, photos and then complaints about the photos because the camera broke had me feeling more than a little fatigued. Probably didn’t help that I didn’t sleep enough the night before, having spent the quiet time catching up on my administrative work, but well, these things do have to be done. Apparently if you don’t complete those new videos about how to tell if your ship is being hacked, they lock you out of your own command systems till you do them. Crazy shit.
Either way, instead of waiting up like the rest of my staff, I had a small bowl of instant noodles before turning in for the night. Edge is fast but not that fast anyway.
I was right. Breakfast the next day came and went. It was admittedly nice to have fresh bacon, eggs and bread, plus various fruit juices that didn’t all taste the same. While the rest of my staff predictably complained about a lack of sleep and I let them go back to bed - There was nothing to do till the results came back anyway. While they all wandered back off to their quarters, I packed some of the fresh food into a container and headed to the lab.
Of course, Edge is a Synth, he doesn’t need to eat, but he appreciates good food as much as the rest of us do. Besides, he’s been alternating between running tests and waiting all night, it’s the least I can do.
I left the food in the little lunch cubicle thing that the lab staff leave all their food before washing my hands and walking in. While I was half expecting to see Edge reading a magazine or something while waiting, I instead found him poking away at a tablet while looking at what looked like a bunch of collated data. He glanced around as I approached and gave me a wave, “Morning Captain, I was just about to send for you, actually.”
“Oh, I popped in to tell you that I packed some breakfast for you, I know you appreciate actual fresh food,” I replied with a nod as I closed the distance, “Should I drag a chair?”
“If you want me to go through the detail, yeah, but it boils down to the fact that yes, that animal was so full of drugs that it would make an addict look sober and that cocktail in the meat had a few not so crushed up pills that point to Alliance-based companies,” Edge replied with a snort, “I’ll send you the report after I eat that food, but I don’t think there’s much of a doubt left.”
“Yeeeeah, but anyone can buy stuff if they have a script,” I replied as I flicked my tail, “It’s probable cause but not concrete.”
“Oh, the idiot who prepared that meat also pricked his finger, so I ran it and he’s definitely one of them, the lizard guys who look like me but meat,” Edge replied as we headed to the door, “I sent the sequence to the I.I.S. and they confirmed that it’s a known operative, though they didn’t give his name.”
I couldn’t help but snort and roll my eyes, I’ve heard of them, lower echelon types in the Alliance, not particularly smart and very obviously also not very good at their jobs, “Somehow, after what I’ve heard, yeah, no surprise. I don’t think even their own allies like them.”
“Wouldn’t be surprised,” Edge replied as we exited the lab and I grabbed the takeaway for him. He gladly took it and we headed back to the canteen to eat, “rarely hear anything good about them, figured it was just racism, but if this guy was good enough to be made into an intelligence operative then they should rebrand to stupidity division.”
I couldn’t help but giggle as I went and grabbed us a mug of juice each – that was the only thing that hadn’t been cleared, “Would be a more accurate name for sure. Well, Command is jumping up and down for this, so once that report is done, send it to me and give me a call, yeah?”
Edge, who was already busy deleting the scrambled eggs in the box gave me a thumbs up. I half considered sitting there with him and enjoying the cold juice, but I didn’t want to put extra pressure on him after that all nighter, so I gave him a wave and made my way back to the little office that had been loaned to me.
I ended up spending a bit of time summarising the entire op for my own report and skimming through a few of the complaints again before my inbox dinged with the report from Edge and I flicked him a quick reply saying that I’d gotten it, so that he wouldn’t need to call me. He called me anyway to show me his nose on video so I told him to go hose out his cooling ports before he hung up.
The report was pretty damming, with Edge linking several of the drugs found in the meat and the animals bloodstream to stuff that’s available in Alliance space, plus some residue with manufacturer marks still visible too. There was also the DNA trace and a few other things. This combined with the existing evidence of sabotage and the like made the case pretty clear cut.
I ended up updating my own report before calling in the Mayor and giving her a brief about the findings. While she was surprised at the audacity on display, she didn’t seem all that surprised about this coming down to sabotage. She also asked me where the missing person from my away team had gone and I told her that he was I.I.S. and that was that.
Command was understandably not impressed and another three cruisers were sent to patrol the system while new appliances, equipment and spare parts were sent. A bulletin was also posted for the colonists so that the news reached everyone. Of course, patrols around the colony were also beefed up with actual troops while everything was repaired and I was ordered to remain with the security forces till either the Alliance operatives surrendered or left the system…
