For a while, I've considered experimenting with alternate versions of my characters in a sci-fi setting where Earth experienced a major boom in personal space flight technology, among other things, featuring a fledgling galactic federation trying to catch up, crazy science, and many normal people turning to mercenary work as a new business. Earth is mostly unchanged by it all thanks to government regulation opting to preserve the feel of pre-boom life, but for many people wanting something new, space is a whole new frontier. I'm still in somewhat early stages of developing the idea, though the basic world building is there.
And with the technological boom came cybernetic augmentation! While some procedures were more invasive, most preferred a less invasive option. Curious about it - and thinking the benefit of swappable limbs might serve him well in his mercenary work - Braden opts for minimally-invasive modifications to grant him ports for detachable arms, legs, head, and even his tail! He's also had some minor alterations made in his stomach, including a backup battery to make up for more intensive limbs, and a stomach port to dump its contents in the odd event he's been poisoned, accessed by pressing his belly button to detach the panel comprised of his real flesh over a metal plate. So far, he's happy with his mods!

This is exactly how modularity works in my universe, except that the process of adding connectors to the limbs is not as invasive in appearance when applied, since they are constructed from the inside with nanobots after an injection. It's great to see someone else with a similar concept!
Yeah, it's been fun coming up with this! I actually thought of doing a similar nanobot-based version years back which would be more like traditional modularity, with the option of being able to be undone. They'd sort of hijack the cells and intelligently transmit data back and forth. Who knows, maybe this is the first stage, and something like that could become Phase II!
