Success! Finally.
The first layer of paint sanded very poorly, so I could not sand the next. Second layer had some minor cracking and dripping and slightly rippled. For automotive work, it would be shoddy. But well within the acceptable range for fursuit eye blanks.
Next I did two layers of clear coat. Only so much can go on in one layer, and more layers make deeper shine. The clear coat performed very well, and hid some of the imperfections in the white.
Masking off, and the final product looks great. Now it will need to dry for the next 7 days!
This image proves several concepts I had in the sanding and painting. On the right, you can see how much better the eye blank blends with the high gloss vinyl. The transition from gloss to matte no longer stands out, and it looks more uniform as an eye. On the left, you see the gloss eye blank with the gloss eye mesh. This shows that they maintain relatively the same level of gloss, transitioning cleanly across the eye. Between both, you can see how much better the blank blends with the mesh/vinyl with the transitioning edge of the eye blank now rounded smooth, rather than having a hard edge. The paint settling in the corners also has a minor blending effect, helping to smooth the hard angle in the corner.
Now I can take a well deserved shower! This project has taken up my time and shower for the last 2 days.

Good accomplishment over the last couple of days. You definitely deserve a shower.
You can always be your worst critic, as can I. What I see above looks good. When you have the distraction of the fur and the mask-structure, the minor cracks and dings will minimally get noticed.
Leave it to an artist in Rogersville notice the velcro and fabric-edges on my deer-antlers. I simply responded, that is how it is designed. Three feet away, it will not get noticed.
Can you see through the eye on-the-right? Or are you going to be hand-drilling the holes? Curious.

I put these into the head base just to test, and I was floored. It looks amazing! By the time it's furred with eyelash and eyelid, you won't notice a thing. My experience painting is with automotive parts, I've been able to get a mirror finish. I have to remember the context here is different. You won't be able to tell, unless you get in my face with a zoom lens.
The eye on the right is totally blind! The smooth undrilled vinyl provides a cleaner example of the gloss, that's why I pictured it. I actually have a completely drilled mesh eye, and pictures from behind it in the base. Look a little further back in the album. I didn't use that eye here, because the PVC mesh backing is warped and only colored with sharpie. This provides a better example for proof of concept.
