There was a bright flash before plumes of smoke appeared over the tree line. A series of smaller flashes and whirring sounds could be heard as small projectiles flew through the sky. Their lungs burned as the two raced back to the manor through thick brambles. An airship could be seen drifting around overhead before taking off towards the capital. The manor was engulfed in a bright inferno. Smoke poured out of windows as nothing but the cackling embers and wind sounded through the clearing. His family's home soon to be nothing but cinders and ash. The former princess's eyes watered through a mix of regret and the heat. They held each other up.

"If I had only been here sooner...If only I stayed at the castle..." The former princess spoke through pained sobs.
His hand left her. "No, they wanted something else. We're just caught in the middle of it." The wolf walked towards the blazing debris while drawing a firearm out of his coat."
"WAIT!" The fox chased after him. Wrapping both arms around him. "I won't let you go in there, I don't want to lose you too."
"That ship will be back when the fire clears. I'm going to need your help getting anyone out before they return."
"If it was her, she's thorough. We're going to be lucky if she doesn't have her machines in there digging through the rubble for survivors already."
"We have to get to the cellar at least or we might as well have died in the shel-" He felt her hug him tighter.
"FORGET IT!" Ice slowly encased his legs.

He turned and put his hand on her. His face calm but a moment away from breaking down as tears dripped down his face.
"If we don't get in there and get the sigil out of the basement your sister is going to use it for her own purposes. I don't want that to happen and you don't want that to happen. So either we get in and grab it so we can keep it away from her, or we sit here and curse the misfortune of tonight while we watch the world fall. If you don't want to go in that's fine but I would rather die in my home then out in the cold wishing I did something."

The witch stared as he turned and tried moving again towards the burning manor. The ice on his legs shattering. She marched after him and together they climbed the steps.
"What do we do when we get it?"
"We start running."
