Eyes soften as the Northern Sovereign takes in the thin child who clings to her fur, his blond hair dirty and face blood-stricken. Dark red heavily coats one side of his face, obscuring the visceral sight of a missing eye.
As the blizzard loudly howls its laments, Iseldrllyr doesn't stir when he presses further into her warmth, trembling fingers intertwining within starlit fur. A heavy wing shifts, her forearm drawing him closer. She feels the child stiffen, hesitation threading through his scrawny frame. Even in the most desolate areas of Aestharim, where settlements stand apart by design, her title is still spoken with quiet certainty.
In this moment, however, the stoic queen who conquered the night is but a fleeting mantle. In this moment, Iseldrllyr is something softer. Something... warmer.
"Rest." Bitter gales howl around them, yet her soft voice, steady and absolute, reaches him all the same. "You're safe now. Everything will be okay."

My goodness, I love this SO much. So, to answer the lingering question: Dest, who is that child? That is actually Kireth as a child! I sat down a while back and decided I really wanted to make him an important figure within Iseldrllyr's story. It's so funny to me lol. He went from just an NPC I featured in a story I wrote for that mirror portrait piece, to now, a fully fledged character of Iseldrllyr's story that I've grown to adore. I have another piece or two planned that will go into a bit more detail on Kireth and Iseldrllyr's history a bit, so I won't spoil toooo much.
Just know that Kireth is someone very dear to her, and she's known him since he was a child. I don't think she herself 'raised' him, despite saving his life, but was a 'motherly' figure in his life nonetheless.
Ah, and yes, poor baby boy lost his eye in his youth. :( But at least he gets to cuddle and get warm with a very fluffy Isel. An equal tradeoff imo...
Lore yap aside, again, really love how this turned out. The snow piling up on Isel's fur, to how warm and kind she looks— I really want to showcase more of that side of her, since, despite her fierceness, Iseldrllyr wasn't unkind. Her being a, literal, safe space for a wounded child also just hits a soft spot with me too lmao. I think, in general, Iseldrllyr's always had a fondness for children of all sorts. Which perhaps makes what happened to her all the worse but... Nonetheless, the artist did a fantastic job here. <3

Heartbreaking not just sad or worse.... Devastating
There is no justice in the world where kindness can be seen as weakness
But I hope so nice she will find her happiness and her sun in cold and cruel world
And somehow I hope she still have the part of her kind self somewhere deep inside
