Do you guys remember this entry? I said I was gonna do a remake of it and oh boy, if I didn't.
So, lemme explain how I got to this end result.
I wanted to do a remake of that art and did a bunch of thumbnails and brain storm. I didn't want it to be just, like, women on their back with their asses showing. I wanted to be... comfortable. Like women comfortable with their own bodies and being in the presence of other women without feeling the need to compare or hide themselves, embarrassed because they feel "inadequate". From this came the idea of adjusting my briefing from "women in display" to "females being comfortable with themselves".
A locker room came later, as I was trying to decided between a sleep over party or a bar, but I guess the locker room in school is the place where most of us, nerds, feel very inadequate, when we see the sporty gals changing and they are hot and fit, and we are chubby and soft. With that thought in mind, I changed the briefing to a locker room, a place where people get naked without second intentions. The idea of a SPA instead of a GYM came when a friend told me about the variety of bodies in school. She said school has ONE type of person: teens. And also, because since I was exploring intimacy in another note, adding underaged characters in such context could get uncomfortable and weird. So we decided that a spa would not only add more variety for bodies but also would remove the fine line between "girls should feel okay with their bodies" and "creepy adult drawing teens changing" *shivers in disgust.
After that, I reached out to friends and asked them permission to use their characters for this piece, since the original has three characters. I reached out to
acissej [which later I came to the information that identifies himself as a man now] since he was in the original piece, but I think he doesn't use that telegram user anymore, and we don't have as much contact as we did. Could've sound weird, specially now that they do not identify with as female anymore, and I do not know how does he feel about the old characte. So new characters were fished out of my current circle of friends. But because I decided to challenge myself, I wanted a DETAILED BACKGROUND WITH CHARACTERS INTERACTING WITH EACH OTHER AND THE BACKGROUND. Why? Because I need to feel something.
I ended up picking Molly, which is my character.
AzeVix-Wolfress's fursona, because she was also in the original piece with Acisse and Cobalt Blu, and also because I am ALWAYS looking for an excuse to draw her chubby goodness. I love her fursona, she is VERY cute.
And then, I decided to go even further beyond and added
SataNats's GORGEOUS fursona, Pandora, at the mirror [you guys have no idea of the horrors of drawing a MIRROR. It is... a journey].
I had an "unused" place in the mirror to flex my perspective grid and perfectionist paranoia, so I asked
Greyfox for one of her characters, and he offered me Alma, which is a P.I. German Shepherd. Unlike Molly, who's "regular", Azevix's chub and Pandora's slim "girl next door" shape, Alma is a police officer, so she's fit. Not super strong or muscular. Just fit. So we had a wee bit of a shape variation. BUT I WANTED MORE.
dogestelarndw had an unfinished character who's a ninja. I don't think she has a name yet, but Estela told me she was muscular and I was like "gibe, I'll add those pecs". And I also had creative freedom with the design, so I added a Sakura branch tattoo on her thigh. Pretty.
Then, I reached out to my friend Akira Ran, which, among people I know, is the one with the most extensive catalogue of OCs. She combed among characters she thought would fit the context better and handed me Genevive Muriel, with her gorgeous curly hair. Lovely lady.
And last, but not least, O Centauro allowed me to draw Ellen, his petite, cute elf OC. The only one I had to face my fears and draw ONE UNIT of bare foot. Holy Guacamole, that was hard.
This was really fun to do, I used brand new techniques I had to learn BECAUSE of this drawing, took me WAY too long to make it, WAY too much pain and tears and frustration, but it is, without a doubt, one of the best illustrations I have ever done... But I do have criticism.
Because the lineart and detailing are too small, specially at the mirror, I think my every-day filters spoiled a bit of the beauty. The noise and cromatic aberration did a disservice for this piece. And second, I should've found a paper texture a bit less rough for this. I did want a recycled paper vibe, but I think this one didn't do very well. Besides that, I am proud, it is beautiful, and I did enjoy the whole idea of grabbing an old concept I did and resignify, redesign and explore.
Will do it again. Soon.
