Interesting name Dorcas. Comes from the Latin I think. In Amharic, it is called Tabitha, if i remember my languages correctly. Ah Tabitha, what a beautiful name- so rare these days. Tabitha was my first love, Tabitha Martinez of the 6th grade- what a beauty.
In both languages it means "Gazelle." In the culture it comes from, it is a way of saying "A beautiful woman."
But in the sense presented here, it came from the English Bible no doubt. Dorcas was a Christian woman in the early period, the period in which Paul wrote his letters. She was a devout woman who let those interested in the gospel meet in her home. She was a woman of more than average means, a dye seller- unless I miss my trivia.
Twas quite a name to have during this woman's time.
Now we laugh and I prefer the name Tabitha to Dorcas. I wonder if the names Dorothy, Dora and Denise may have descended from Dorcas... They are one and all beautiful names.
