A solid story. Had shades of With the Old Breed in it, especially with how hardened combat troops respond to the suffering of children on the battlefield.
I'm guessing the near future tech of this story lacks nuclear, chemical or biological weapons because of bans or some sort of counter-battery-weaponry the hybrids employ. Would figure the humans would use them when their existence was threatened... or perhaps they've already used them, and that's why the world is a thrashed as you describe it.
Good environmental descriptions, by the way!
