How time flies! I remember when I first saw it on television, starting in 1986... as soon as I saw it, I became a huge fan of the series immediately!
According to the history of the cartoon and based on the information found on this site:

and in Phil Mendez's own words, Kissyfur began this way:
“It started because my son Christopher couldn't get his sister to read a book to him,” Mendez recalled. "He was four at the time and I said I'd make him a book that he could read. I drew a book of pictures about a bear cub and his troubles. I called the book 'Kissyfur' because that is the way Christopher said his own name when he had a missing tooth.
"I put up seven thousand dollars and another seven thousand was slow to me by a friend. After I had the books printed I gave one to Christopher and I had 1,999 copies left. A friend of mine owned a bookstore and he took 30. They quickly sold out and they kept selling.
"Phyllis Tucker Vinson, who's in charge of Saturday morning programming at NBC saw the book and asked if I'd do a Saturday morning show. I said 'no'. I'd worked as an animator at the Disney Studios and Hanna-Barbera and did commercials for Dancer Fitzgerald Sample advertising agency and I knew what quality was. And I knew the quality of the Saturday morning shows.
"Instead I produced the four specials for prime time. Kissyfur is the story of a bear cub who has lost his mother and is raised by his father, Gus. They were circus bears but escaped and now live in a swamp with a variety of characters. The whole concept is that it's a single parent show. NBC wanted to call the show Paddlecab County but I refused. I said that I'd promised my son I'd name the show after him. I said if they changed the name I wouldn't do the show!”
My drawing is an anniversary drawing, celebrating 40 years since it aired on NBC, but first Phil Mendez published the book he made for his son titled "KISSYFUR'S HONEYPOT"!
In my drawing, the one on the right was originally done by Phil Mendez, which appears on the cover of the original book, and the one on the left was done by hand by me!
Of all the cartoons I've seen in my life (and there are countless ones), many have been my favorites for a long time, like "The Raccoons" and "Dungeons & Dragons"...but the one that captivated me forever was this classic cartoon called "Kissyfur"...40 years is a long time, but I'll never forget it and it will always be in my heart forever!

This is so lovely! And a nice history lesson. :3
I didn't get to see a lot of Kissyfur when I was young. It's thanks to you that I was introduced to it and I absolutely love it! It made me smile when I heard Kissyfur's voice because he sounded exactly like Kit Cloudkicker, and I thought it was perfect. Thank you for the great memories my friend! :3

Oh yes I made it down to the isolated part of the comment section!
So I get to read what you and everyone else said .
Now they're gone to comment elsewhere and I don't have to worry of anybody else reading my comment if I posted it earlier before theirs.
Pffft! Never mind!
But now for my 2 cents!
This show! At 11 it was appealing to me without knowing the origin story behind it till what small details the internet reviled of it. Forget the library! Thank you internet and the creator of this show!
Such brilliant imagination involved for producing this show of animal offspring doing dubious and childish things as human children do!
Show didn't desirably run long enough for me as you can notice impressions on the characters design throughout the series.
From DIC Animation to I swore that Disney had their influence in it.
The show made it's brief appearance in the early 90s....
Is it any wonder why im furryish to this very day..
Huh?!
Now to the criticism......
Mendez's original rough conception of KissyFur seem more feral like with small amounts of anthromorpic qualities...
Arms jointed like human, paws made like a chimp, and chest down more true to bears' anatomy. He could stand using a good neck.... errrr never mind!
Phil Mendez probably had to get into several fights about his original design.!
Looks like Walt won the fight.
He's the undisputed mob boss you know!?
Well at least they all settled for the familiar look of how you drew him on the left.
Your drawing of him needs a thicker neck!
He'll choke on a sandwich or cooked dry chicken or sumpthin!
You probably thinking I need to shut up since you're still drawing and look at me!
I'm sowwie Freddy I don't know what come over me !? Can you ever forgive me?!
I wonder how he gets his big head through his t-shirt?
You should drawn this as a mirror image.
I know... I know..... I should shut up and draw my own opinions!
Google the circus train derailment of Tyrone ,Pennsylvania .
Sounds so familiar kissyFur's origin story!

Aw de Nada mi amigo Freddy!
I just read back what I typed!
Eww spell check changed whut i meant to spell ...
I wanted to say subtle improvements were made to the characters during the span of the series..
Oh stalp being modest about my observations... I just looks for details of things...
That t-shirt on the redesign kissyFur really gave him a let personality!
Then the blue eyes is anatomically correct for most new born mammals that may change to another color during growth.
Bears' eyes usually settle on hues of brown....
This should be a figurine!
Ouch! Im 40 years older....
