You all thought I was working on the comic for the last three days didn't ya? Nope, I was spending that time to get here, the Palisade Glacier in Central California. Normally one doesn't associate Central California with glaciers, but that's where this one resides. As far as glaciers go, it's not that impressive. What makes this one special is that it's the southernmost glacier in the US, and the only one I've ever seen from this close(about 1/4 mile away).
The photograph doesn't do this place justice. I'm standing at 12,400 feet(about 3700m) above sea level taking this shot. The glacial pool(mostly frozen) in the lower right is at 12,000 feet(about 3600m), North Palisade Peak just to the right of center is 14,242 feet(about 4300m) high. So from the pool to the peak is a vertical half mile. My friend and I weren't brave enough to hike down to the pool. The boulders in the foreground were very unstable.
I'm not big on posting photos, but I wanted to share this one with you all. I'd wanted to see this place for years, and finally got to do it over the last few days. This was my last backpacking trip of the summer, so I should be able to put a little more time into the comic. Cheers everyone!

The camera's exposure adjusted to the snow and ice, so unfortunately yes, the sky came out an exceptionally dark blue.
My understanding is that this glacier is free of crevasses and such. So provided you dodged the rocks and didn't fall into the icy pool at the bottom, it would probably be great to ski after a fresh snow. At the time I was there though, the snow had sun-cups in it from a summer's worth of melting.

No town actually, I was the operator at Cottonwood Power Plant on Cottonwood Creek. I would operate power stations from Bishop to Haiwee. I retired in 2005 after 32 years on the job. Now I live in Ridgecrest. The first 20 of those years though were in the LA area; I worked for LADWP.
Wow. On this great big giant planet Earth, no matter where you may find yourself, there's an extremely high chance that there is at least one other area in the world which bears resemblence to wherever you happen to be. But this? All I can say is that I have never seen any place or any picture of any place that even looks merely a tad bit similar to this Palisade Glacier. Wow. Just... wow.
