I actually don't think he's evil - not like some of the other villains in "Pinocchio" - but more amoral and opportunistic. I could even see him being portrayed more sympathetically in a sequel to the original film, perhaps even grudgingly helping the protagonists instead of working against them. Hey, that'd be something, wouldn't it?
