Autumn, Nineteenth Year of the Xin Zhuo Emperor
On the appointed day, both sides gathered at the field to do battle. Morha had assembled a massive host of a hundred thousand warriors, ten times more than the Provincial Army of Jing. Greatly outnumbered, Governor Huang's forces aligned themselves with their flanks protected, anchoring one end of their line to the foot of the mountain. The other flank was placed around the Stone Sentinel Maze, knowing that no one in their right mind would risk going through that enigma.
The Governor’s troops were well trained, clad in mountain pattern armor, and armed with ji, halberds, guandao, sabers, bows and crossbows, with even a regiment of shenjiying. On the other hand the Dragoncult army was a barely trained force of militia, clad in leather and mostly armed with spears, clubs and bows plus whatever weapons and armor could be scavenged. Yet sheer numbers mattered, and it was clear that Governor Huang's forces would be quickly destroyed by a horde that had won ten straight battles against five armies from three provinces.
And of course the Dragoncult Army had a dragon.
Morha was resplendent in her polished mirror armor, her fur cleaned and buffed to a sheen. More importantly it seemed that her demeanor had greatly improved for this fight, regaining some of her confidence and assertiveness and perhaps even cockiness. Royal Advisor Hong Jue nodded approvingly, impressed by the improvement:
Perhaps the unruly dragon had finally seen the error of her ways.
Alternatively, he had broken her. Either reason was acceptable.
Hong watched his charge swagger through the army; the mušḫuššu had been freed from her bindings early, and she seemed eager to join the fight. That was good; now that the purple dragon had fallen in and publicly displayed obsequiousness to him, the shaman's plans were nearly complete. Sooner or later the Queen of Ba Valley would need to ascend back up to the Heavens, and then her advisor could officially steward the Dragoncult Army to power over Jiangshan.
And the quicker Morha ascended to Heaven, the quicker Hong Jue could take over to form a new dynasty.
From a distance of one li the two armies assembled and stared at each other, the small disciplined Jing army facing a massive sea of cultists. Then, almost gleefully, the purple dragon stepped out in front of her army, loudly calling to the opposing Provincials.
“I see enemies in front of me! You are brave folks, but it matters not. For I, Morha, Queen of Ba, will destroy you all!”
The Dragoncult Army cheered thunderously, the roar echoing across the mountains. Despite their discipline, the Jing forces shook involuntarily. Hong smiled, folding his arms. This battle could be decisive, in more ways than one.
Then, a lone human stepped out from the Provincial ranks.
“I will oppose you, corrupted Queen.” Governor Huang retorted. “I will defend my province and my people!”
The Governor was dressed in his own ornate mirror and mountain armor, red tassel tailing from his iron dome helm. Still he looked every inch the scholar administrator as opposed to a warrior.
Morha guffawed. “You old man? Ha! Don't make me laugh!” She turned to dismiss the Dragoncult forces. “Steady, my people! This brave fool dares to confront your Queen! Let me teach him a lesson!”
Hong was taken aback by this abrupt turn of events. The Governor of Jing was known to be wise and capable. The coming battle was a certain defeat for him, but perhaps that was an honorable way to lead.
Why then was the old man foolishly calling for a duel with a dragon?
Governor Huang ignored the mockery. As the purple dragon slunk towards him, confident and predatory like a cat toying with its prey, the administrator of Jing Province drew forth his jian and raised it into the air.
“This is the sword of the legendary Judicator Bao. With this, I will bring back justice and restore balance to the World!”
Morha picked up speed, charging right at the governor, who stroked his beard and then readied his jian. A gasp collectively erupted from both armies as the mušḫuššu leapt into the air from ten paces away, lightning crackling from her body.
Governor Huang swung his sword into the air-poorly, without finesse.
“Back foul demon!”
To the surprise of everyone, a flash of light erupted and Morha was thrown back, landing with a grunt. In an instant, the dragon leapt back onto her feet.
“A dirty trick!” She snarled.
The governor calmly advanced, full of confidence.
“No, you poor corrupted dragon, this is the power of righteousness!”
Another gasp erupted through the field.
Hong was staring as well. What is going on?
Morha lashed out again, and again a flash of light threw her back. She tried a third time and the governor barely even swung his sword to knock her over. The flash blinded everyone.
“Oh no my powers!” The Queen of Ba suddenly called out.
Now Governor Huang readied his sword and approached the dragon.
Growling, Morha clawed at the governor, but the swipes were unexpectedly slow and Governor Huang easily avoided them. Now panicking, the purple dragon began trying to back away from her human opponent, only to trip on her hind legs and land on her back. Even then, Morha attempted to flee, crawling backwards on her forearms. It didn't help. The human inexorably approached, stepped atop the dragon’s legs, then up her belly and chest. Before anyone realized what had happened, Morha was on her back with her tongue hanging out, forearms raised into the air, as the governor stood over her in triumph.
“Heaven's mercy! Don't!” She dramatically exclaimed.
Some one hundred and ten thousand individuals stared in shock at the outcome of the duel in front of them.
“I surrender! Please have mercy!” Morha pleaded.
Governor Huang pointed his jian at the purple dragon’s neck.
“What do you request of me, that you don’t deserve?” He called at the top of his voice, which wasn’t very loud.
“Please! Spare my life and that of my followers!”
“Do you deserve it?”
“No, I have been a bad dragon. But I can be good again!”
Governor Huang stroked his beard. “Yes, yes you can. Queen Morha of Ba. Will you be willing to surrender yourself with all of your followers?”
“Yes, yes I will.”
“Good.” As the hundred thousand Dragoncult members stood stupified, Governor Huang lowered his sword and stepped off the mušḫuššu.
Hong had seen enough. He wasn’t sure what was going on, why the Governor had a magic sword, how he had defeated Morha, or why she was groveling like a dog, but the shaman needed to quickly turn things around. He raised his staff into the air.
“Dragon followers! Attack!” Hong set off running, but after a few dozen paces stopped. He looked back to find the entire Dragoncult army continuing to be transfixed by the drama occurring in front of them.
“Attack you fools!” The shaman repeated.
In the middle of the field, Morha got back to her feet. She bowed to the Governor of Jing.
“Ten thousand mercies, Governor. I will kneel before my better.”
Governor Huang raised his sword in triumph. “Thus all who stray from the path fail before the righteous!” He announced to all observers.
Morha went further and groveled at her enemy’s feet.
“I now see that I have fallen and that righteousness always prevails! How have I strayed so far?”
Governor Huang smiled and gave the purple dragon a gentle pat on her head.
“I know that you were once a wise and honorable dragon. It must be poor counsel given from your advisor.”
The armies collectively gasped a third time at the same moment Hong realized what had happened.
Morha lowered her head in submission.
“I want to be good again. Show me the way back to the proper path. I shall be your disciple.”
“Kill the Governor!” Hong yelled at the dragon's followers. Everyone ignored him.
Meanwhile the Governor of Jiang gave the mušḫuššu another pat, finally sheathing his sword.
“As I see you are a good beast who has been led astray, I will extend mercy and become your teacher. Have your people obey me as well, and they will be pardoned for their crimes unless they have inflicted horrors that have insulted the Heavens.”
Morha closed her eyes.
“I am your humble servant, Governor.”
“Don’t you all see? This is an act! A play!” Hong yelled as he charged forward to confront the two leaders with his staff. However some Dragon Followers now broke ranks and tackled him, wrestling his weapon away.
In front of everyone, Governor Huang pulled out a large ornate golden gorget from a pouch.
“Let this be a token of our teacher pupil relationship.” He solemnly intoned, before fastening it over the purple dragon's neck.
Morha raised up again and smiled. “Thank you, my master. What do you ask from your humble servant?”
The Governor stood back and stroked his beard.
“Perhaps now is the best time to chastise your inept and corrupt advisor.”
