A creature I saw in Ootokaa- really, a combination of two otherwise unrelated dreams; one in which I saw the Grue in a fast food restaurant before everyone vanished, and another where me and a friend were exploring a supposed-to-be-abandoned school, hearing murmurs from nearby- my friend went to investigate, and quickly returned, her face covered in green paint, and shook her head, having felt something terrible.
"GRUES
RESULTS: EVANESCENT
DEPORTMENT: INTERLOPER, MANES, OBSCURE, RIPPLE, REGURGITANT
We are serpents. Our residue fills rooms, slowly. Even briefly present, we leave behind something, however small. Our dust. Our voices. Our blood and flesh. Nature abhors a vacuum, even here. Something lives to feed on our echoes. Grues are common pests in the realm, yet far more onerous than ordinary acarids.
They manifest in spaces of former habitation - invisible to the eye, but audible by their constant murmuration, muffled and low. They are averse to men, and will not usually apparate in places recently tread. Where they do trespass, they defend fiercely - those who enter a room cohabited by a Grue will have moments to leave before it retaliates. The action of a Grue is difficult to measure; the individual will vanish instantly, and awaken later as though they died, bearing residual trauma of an event they cannot remember- like a fading dream. Intense claustrophobia, autophobia, and an inability to see the color green, which last for some hours or days.
Grues are visible in lens and aperture- appearing as grey, yam-shaped entities, five or six feet in height, with a number of dark, vertical slits in their form. They hover upright, some distance above the ground, rotating languidly, otherwise unmoving - through microphone, they are heard producing a constant, deafening, cacophonous screaming. When detecting intrusion, they begin to shake, and the volume of their howling grows louder- quieting when they have vanished the threat. Afterwards, they remain shaking, their orifices opened notably wider, until the entity reawakens.
Grues have a curious "allergy" to the color green. Covering one's face with anything green- green paint seeming the most effective -seems to render the Grue blind to their presence, preventing them from attacking. It is not foolproof - stepping too close, or making too much noise, still incites aggression. Grues seemingly appear less in residences painted green, or with green furnishings inside of their rooms.
They are very upsetting. I don't like them. I've tried to get close to make out what they're saying, but it never works out. Lots of voices on top of each other, muffled like they're behind a wall, even when you're right beside them. That Grues are so common is a hindrance to exploration. I have to carry green paint with me everywhere I go, because every room might have a Grue in it. If you hear voices, don't assume they're human."
