The Pit isn't, strictly speaking, a legal attraction. Contact sports are regulated, and generally only playable by knights or others of high station, and have lots of rules and equipment to ensure those involved don't take any permanent injuries. Out on the rim though, rules have less meaning, and even the patrolmen who guard the roads are in on the business. It can get really boring on the edge of civilization, after all! Even though The Pit isn't exactly public with its branding, it is a great place to start if one wants to get their name out there. Even if that name might not be of one's own choosing...
