Just making this general post to warn everyone about this person who just tried to scam me out of god knows how much money.
After asking for payment on a ych, I received this email from what at first glance seemed to be PayPal. But instead of the usual PayPal address, it actually showed up as "service@paypal.co.uk" which is described as a scam address online.
This user pretended that this is just how PayPal payments from the UK works, despite the fact that :
- Out of the 8 years I've been using PayPal, never ONCE have I been asked to "claim" money.
- This email was sent in English which doesn't make sense because it should be using my native language. Y'know. The one I use PayPal with ?
- it starts with "hi [email]". On the PayPal website, they say specifically that they will NEVER use that formulation when talking to someone and that any email that does so is a scam.
- My PayPal account doesn't display any payments from them (gasp what a coincidence !)
I gave them the benefit of the doubt and asked for their email. Which oh so perfectly matched the scam mail's name. I told them that they should pay the ych or I can and will report them, but they actually doubled down and told me that I was falsely accusing them, and even made a post about it defending themselves and playing as the victim.
I encourage everyone to not interact with them, not harass them, but to simply report them to mods and not accept any money from them.
Stay safe everyone !
