Wild Cards: Jack and Ace, part 18
The next day, as they planned, Elisa had walked to the cafeteria and got her meal. She looked around for Isaac, and made a B-line for him the moment he walked in. “Hey, I know a good spot, Follow me.”
“Okay…” Isaac said, walking behind the cat with his homemade lunch bag.
The two walked for a few stair flights, going as far as going up onto the roof of the building. Gravelly roof with fences around the whole perimeter, but there was a nice view to the horizon with a nice breeze. Isaac paused as he looked at the view, and it took him a moment to realize that Elisa had settled down by one of the ventilation machines. He joined her and opened his lunch on the rocks.
“So… about yesterday.”
“Where do we even start?” Elisa giggled, “Secret identities or the case we’re on?”
“I mean…” Isaac hesitated, “You already know why I do what I do and you got your stuff so…”
“The villains?” Elisa took a bite of food, “Good thing we came up here then. First a bank, then they take some electric stuff.”
“Robbing a bank is pretty basic,” Isaac said, “But electronics, you have to sell those after you steal them. Everyone probably knows what to look for on the markets now.”
“It may not be sold then.” Elisa said, “All those phones and tablets, there’s lots of good little parts in them.”
“Trying to make something?” Isaac thought about that, “Maybe a bomb? Or would they need stronger batteries for that?” He scratched the back of his head, “Smart enough people could make anything with those.”
“That… doesn’t narrow down much…” Elisa sighed, “They got to be linked in some way.” She took a sip of juice. “Only think I notice is that they use the same cheap armor, it keeps them safe but breaks easily.”
“I’m shocked they can get so much of it so fast.” Isaac said, “If it breaks so fast, you’d think they’d have lots of these… may be real rich.”
“They wouldn’t need to steal stuff if they were rich.” Elisa said, “They’d get better stuff than… Homemade… junk…” She looked at her backpack. “Hold on. What if that’s the case? What if they’re just making this stuff from scrap and junk?”
“But it works real well, you’d have to know what to look for.” Isaac said, “You’d need to know what’s good, how to fix stuff, how to put it together…” He started to drift off mid sentence.”
“You’re thinking what I’m thinking aren’t you?” Elisa said, “The salvage union?”
“It was odd they could afford to stay working this long.” Isaac said.
