Dinky dug her nails into the upholstery as her mother took a hard left, the V8 engine guzzling another gulp of gas as a plum of smoke coughed out the exhaust pipe. Dinky knew Equestria Mail was known for their expansive fleet of vans, but she never knew they never let any of them go. The van she was currently riding in just turned 50 and was showing no signs of calling it quits. Rickety and peeling, it's logos long since faded and peeled away by the elements.
The engine however, was a trooper. 8 cylinders and enough muscle to haul even the heaviest of loads, including a love seat that has been weighing the rear of the van down for the last six months.
"Quite the beauty, ain't she, honey?" Derpy asked over the rumble of the engine as the muffler coughed once more. "I'd say Carl's been here longer than some of our veteran delivery mares!"
"I'd believe that." Dinky replied meekly, her glove peeling back on a sticky residue left behind on the arm rest. Recoiling in visible disgust, Dinky turned her attention to her uniform. Pressed and proper, it was a far cry from the hand-me-downs she wore on her first day on the job. Twice her size, Dinky tumbled left and right in her mother's old work-skirt and blouse until the manager found a spare in her size.
"You looking forward to your first day on the beat, dear?" Derpy asked as they rounded another corner. "I know your first day could have gone better-"
"-I tripped and pulled down the skirts of three ponies-"
"-Oh, happens to the best of us!"
"-And I lost my glove in the sorting machine-"
"-Happens every Thursday!"
"-And then I scuffed the CEO's 600 dollar shoes-"
"-Serves her right! She needs proper footwear!"
"-MOM." Dinky barked, catching her mother by surprise. "I know you are trying to make me feel better, but maybe this isn't just cut out for me! I can find another job! The Cakes are hiring, the Apples are always looking for extra hands. Rarity needs someone to stock her boutique... I just don't want everypony’s deliveries relying on whether or not I can get the job done."
Derpy sighed, pulling the van over to the curb. Dinky blinked as her mother put the van into park and turned off the ignition, the engine rattling to a stop. "You are going to judge your performance on your first day?"
"-Well, yeah-"
"Dinky, I nearly ruined an Apple Family reunion on my first day!"
"Yeah, well that nearly happens all the time-"
"AND I almost burned the reception area down!"
"-...How?"
"They weren't kidding, that hot pepper gum delivered a mean kick." Derpy sighed, clambered out of the van and walking to the passenger side, swinging the door wide open as Dinky unbuckled her seat belt. "Point is, I made mistakes. You've made mistakes based on some old hand-me-downs."
"This outfit isn't any better, I still can't lace these boots up properly."
"-Neither can I!" Derpy exclaimed, raising her foot high. The boot laces were a mangled mess, having been hastily tied together this morning. "Point is, they stay on... for the most part." She turned her attention back to the task at hand, letting out a small sigh. "The point is, I've learned from my mistakes. And you are still learning!" Derpy approached her daughter, placing her hands on her shoulders. Dinky's gaze trailed off, but Derpy pushed her chin up. "Dinky... look at me." Dinky resisted the urge, but nonetheless complied. "You will do just fine. You passed your driving test with flying colors. You aced your last exam. You got the job with your wonderful resume, and you look splendid in your uniform. You were born to wear it, dear. Don't let one bad day keep you down."
Dinky smirked, knowing the gaze her mother was not of hostility like their boss, but warm and kind. Derpy was proud of her daughter
Jumping out of the van and landing on the sidewalk with the loud CLUNK of her boots, Dinky straightened out her skirt and pulled up her stockings. "If you think so, I'll give it a shot." Dinky's smirk faded as she took in her surroundings. "Where do we start, mom?"
"I'll take the high road-" Derpy laughed, pulling on her goggles. "-You, take the ground floor." Derpy pulled the keys out of her pocket and held them up high. Dinky blinked as the sun reflected off the keys.
“Really?”
“Yup."
“REALLY?”
"No, you'll walk." Derpy chuckled, placing them in her daughter's hand. "Here you go honey."
Dinky was simply giddy. This would be the first time she would be able to drive on her own! Giggling, Dinky jumped back and forth on her feet, only to trip on her boot lace and stumble forward, falling into her mothers arms. Blushing slightly, Dinky regained her composure as Derpy patted her daughter's shoulders.
"You can drive, on one condition." Derpy said sternly. Dinky blinked. "What?"
Derpy smiled happily. "Have fun, honey."
Dinky clenched the keys tightly, stepping back. "I'll give this job another shot, mom. I'll try my best. I'm not going to let one bad day keep me down."
"I know you will do your best, sweetie. You already drive better than I do!"
"Where else would we go? The Gas and Gulp!?" Derpy laughed, re-adjusting her goggles before flapping her wings. gaining momentum, Derpy kicked off from the ground and soared high. "You take care now, Dinky! I love you!"
"Love you too, mom!" Dinky smiled as her mother soared over the neighborhood before disappearing behind the trees. Where a loud CRASH boomed moments later.
"OH DERPY, NOT AGAIN!!" Bon-Bon's shrill voice snapped back, causing Dinky to recoil slightly.
Her spirits not hampered, Dinky turned her gaze back to the road as her Mother got back on track, a clothesline caught on her ankle. Dinky caught sight of Rarity driving her Corvette with Sweetie-Belle riding shotgun. yesterday, Dinky would have hid behind Carl in embarrassment, but today, she stood tall. Dinky waved happily at Sweetie, who looked like she would rather be anywhere but in the front seat of a bright purple convertible. Dinky smiled - Rarity must have wanted to get to the mall before the doors opened again.
But, back on track. She had a job to do! Dinky opened Carl's passenger door and hoisted herself over the seat, before settling in the driver's seat and looking the clipboard. Oh yeah, she REALLY had a job to do.
Another writing/daz3d commission and collab between me and
TheOwlinTheCabbageField from 2015 or so who helped with some writing here and there on the short story, with an outfit based on one drawn by Dvixie of Deviantart, which can still be found here https://twibooru.org/2246280?q=arti.....vixie%2C+derpy but due to Daz3d's and Owls limited outfit selection at the time the top blouse could have been a bit better. Still cute, tho!
Really gotta order a com of these two again, taking this trip down memory lane is giving me idea's!
