One more character to show off for now, though I'll admit that when I came up with the concept I had no idea when/where I was going to use him, so for now consider him part of the worldbuilding. Drawn by NDA, here's a member of the New York supervillain community from back in the fifties, The Wiseman.
On June 17, 1952 rocket scientist Jack Parsons almost died in what might have been an experiment gone wrong, but here he barely managed to survive the blast. There was some significant scarring and the skin-job certainly could've been better though it could've been worse.
Resting up in recovery and musing over the incident, he became convinced the chemicals were tampered with to explode and kill him. For the life of him however, he couldn't figure out WHO was trying to murder him, perhaps it was Federal agents, a traitorous former friend, old employers seeking their distance, people eager to prevent his immigration to Israel, or someone he didn't even see coming.
It's not publicly known whether he was right or wrong, what is known is that he escaped the hospital in November to try and escape further believed attempts on his life, he went off into the desert seemingly never to be seen again...for three years.
Parsons had delved deep into spiritualism and the occult in an attempt to find answers, instead however he emerged onto an unsuspecting New York as a costumed criminal and terrorist called 'The Wiseman'. Using his knowledge of rocket science and the occult to devise crimes primarily aimed at gathering the resources to fight back against the people he believed were trying to murder him, though he was just as likely to seek revenge on the people involved in stripping him of his security clearance and also his job, other times he seemed more interested in gaining resources to pursue rocket science or the occult, usually with little concern for collateral damage that may or may not have resulted.
Parsons would often announce his crimes with enigmatic parables and riddles that if solved, could indicate his next move., this trait is believed to have been inspired by long deceased Baltimore criminal mastermind The Black Falcon, though Parsons had a superior knack for obfuscation.
New York was full of masked avengers by this time, though it was in the late fifties that he'd end up developing a particularly antagonistic relationship with Charles Chandler, who had long since given up his previous mantle of Crimebuster and took up his mentor's mantle to become the new Black Bat. Their battles of wits and fists would lead to The Wiseman being considered Charles' archenemy, which wouldn't be that hard given that the previous contender for that title died in WWII. A more unnerving part of his legacy, were the gangs that sprung up immitating his actions, though the most notorious fan of his emerged on the opposite side of the country.
Parsons died in the early eighties, but like many famous dead he came back to life in 2010 when R-Day happened.
He's wasted no time at all in resuming his career as a supervillain, though significantly more wary than before due to how recent history made the US government treat terrorists very differently from when he was previously alive.
Jack Parsons is a historical figure and essentially in the public domain, though this depiction of the man belongs to me.
