“My name is Arthur?”
The great lion gave a slow, purposeful nod, his mane forming to the slightest of movements,
“With a name you shall rule and all will come to remember it by heart,”
Brows furrowed in confusion on the boy, gazing upon the crown he had been gifted, still puzzling through it’s purpose,
“But…what does it mean?” Arthur looked up to the solemn, emerald eyes of the lion who answered with a twitch of his whiskers,
“It is the name of the bear who rules the heavens,” His gaze shifted to the stars above them, littering the inky black sky, “and like him, you will have the blessing of the heavens upon your kingdom, but…”
Arthur blinked, “But?”
“Beware the winter bear of the east and do not quarrel with him, for you will not be able to defeat him as you will the crowing bird of dawn,” The lion lowered his head to keep his gaze steady with the small, curious eyes of the boy, “If you do not heed my warning and do not stay on this land that has been granted as yours and yours alone, you will pay a heavy price,”
Clutching the crown, Arthur hunched his shoulders as he digested the lion’s words, pursing his lips almost comically in thought, venturing on with, “…but it’s lonely here…”
A toothy smile answered him, brightening the cat’s face, “And that is why I shall grant you three brothers who live amongst the people as we speak. They will keep you company so long as you promise me something,”
Coming closer, Arthur put tiny hands upon the cat’s muzzle, whispering back, “What? I’ll promise you anything!”
“Promise me to avoid the mortal sins, of which greed and envy will plague your mind. An immortal has no need for them, but the longer you live amongst your people the longer they will threaten to overtake you. Remember my words, Arthur, and I will return to you, but for now, I must take my leave,”
Large paws gripped the ground to push his massive body up, beginning to lumber away from the boy who jumped up after him, calling, “Wait! Come back! I want to know more! Please stay!”
But the lion had already made his leave, joining his brethren once again amongst the stars to watch over the ones they had granted the power of everlasting life in order to guide the newly formed keepers of the Earth.
