I had a good teacher one time who had everyone draw a simple smiley face: two dots and a curve. Then we all compared smiley faces and thought about things like "how big are the dots" and "how far apart are the dots" and "how far are the dots from the curve" and "how wide is the curve." This helped teach us to notice aspects we were otherwise taking for granted.
