He has witnessed over the long centuries the rise and fall of nations, empires, tyrants, and peasants. If there's one thing that he knows as a personal truth despite great dispute is that violence and war can, and often do, serve for good and that death is sometimes warrented; a belief that now seems like such a farcry ideal whenever he recalls his past and long shed naivete."
