I fear his imagination was far too limited for such horrors,
for indeed to believe in a kind and loving God, one must believe the God opposes that which they detest. A divinity that calls anathema all that falls below the standard of 'good'. And yet still the God in his heaven deems the Empire just. Blake once drew Africa and Asia as sisters supporting Europa, in a book about the violent repression of a Surinamese slave rebellion. Forward-thinking and liberal as he was for his time, could Blake have imagined the colonial independence movement? I struggle to think he could.
