Terra is a world run by a matriarchal society with a strong focus on legacy and ambition. While many couples do form out of love, there is a lot of question about offspring and how they will appear to the rest of the world. Both sexes take toward this differently.
Women are treated very well in this society because they are uncommon, but many of them are needed to keep a society going. They are beloved by society and held to high expectations.
On Terra, ultimately, women make the choice of who they marry, right to making the proposals to men. However, no matter who they choose, there will always be scrutiny over this decision. This many comes from other females, questioning if the mate they chose is good enough. Physically capable of caring for the woman, status in society, there is a lot that could be nitpicked.
Men on Terra are always seen as strong and capable, but ultimately expendable because of how common they are. This often leads to them being mistreated or ignored. As a result, when a man is chosen by a woman to be their husband, it is celebrated within their friend group; met with envy at worst and praise at best.
Now, of course, there are other kinds of relationships. (I cannot stop people from trying to go outside the norm) However these relationships are rare and bare heavy scrutiny.
The rarest of them all is a polygamy or harem. These often consist of multiple of one gender and one of the other. These are seen as very odd, and also do not last very long. If there is a male at the center of it, the women refuse to share him, and fight over him. The idea of sharing their man with someone else is seen as disgraceful. When a woman is the center of this, the males tend to leave on their own as they feel less loved than the others in the polygamy.
Next up is homosexual couples. These are more common that people know, and they are hidden for good reason. Same sex couples cannot produce offspring, meaning there would be no bloodline legacy after them. By everyone, this is seen as disgraceful and a waste. Same sex couples may still occur anyways, despite what people would say; they are just hidden to save face. Women may often do this because they cannot reproduce, be it age or medical reasons, so they take comfort in one another who share that issue. Males, though rarely, will do this as well, either because they cannot reproduce or just have been rejected too many times and gave up.
Most common of all are interspecies couples, because Terra is a world with many different races. This use to be discriminated against long ago, and still can be by older generations. However, it's being accepted more and more as research is showing it to be not much different than a same species couple. The only odd result is the offspring. They can only be born the species of one of the parents, and, for some reason, if they are the species of one parent, they end up with the color pigments of the opposite parent.
For example, if an otter and lion became a couple and had kids. the otter pups would be colored like lions and the lion cubs would be colored like the otter.
This seems to be a recessive genetic, for when those kids grow up to have their own families, those off spring follow the same suit for some reason.
