with promotion speed being relative to survivability (particularly in the early years of the war), henry would leave the front as a lieutenant, having been medically discharged after a shrapnel shell took off his lower left leg from the knee down during an ambush. he would spend the next year (with the war resolving shortly after his hospitalization; interwar period) recovering in a war hospital, where he was treated for both his leg and for war neurasthenia (and his alcoholism, but that kind of goes hand-in-hand with the neurasthenia).
