I like to imagine that the markings we see in the games are like the "breed standard" depictions of those markings. And that Pokemon markings actually vary much more than that.
I imagine for litten, the breed standard would look for an uninterrupted "fishbone" marking on the head, and symmetrical striping on the legs.
