I'm not a good mapmaker, but I like making them, helps me organize my thoughts. This represents a fraction of the planets surface, the site of the original developed areas. Even as a destination for millions of station colonies, most of the surface was never inhabited, never really exploited. Instead people were herded into specific built up areas connected by highways and rail.
Here are some facts about Old and Current Anteros
Old Anteros
-Was eventually home to three different Space Elevators to economically ferry visitors to and from the surface, the most of any empire planet
-A hotbed for the development and testing for various technologies. Terraforming tech was used to create themed areas. Failsafe robotics were tested on guests to see how people would react to them... and they'd react to people. Most famously though, Anteros was the only place where gene editing was (publicly) deployed, inflicted on their employees and used to create their galaxy famous Mascot lifeforms, both of which would suffer swift execution anywhere else
-Never self sufficient. While some agriculture was present, mostly to provide picturesque tours and the freshest of food for their elite guests and management, even at its height it would struggle to feed even 4% of the planets population and guests a single day. Much of the chaos of the collapse came not from the war or plague that ravaged other sectors, but the loss of the food ships. Hunger is a brutal foe...
Current Anteros
-Nearly unrecognizable from it's ancient state. Only the ruins, built from materials now unknown in this largely Stone and Bronze world, endure to tell the misremembered story of the ancient past
-The population of the main continent is mostly concentrated within three great cities, all on a great prairies now known as the Fields of Gold and Crimson. Ruled by utter despots, they war with each other as often as they trade, all at the whims of the indolent and mad elite.
-Though seldom understood, artifacts of the old empire often reappear. Pulled from the unyielding earth, dragged out of hostile ruins and bunkers, or literally plummeting from the glittering sky, such artifacts are jealously hoarded by any with the power to keep them, regardless if they work or not. It is not unusual to see a army march to war with stone or copper spear tips, while the Rulers Mouth rides a flying platform, relic raygun in hand, and ancient machines drag great boulders to fling.
-There are currently five distinct species on Anteros
-Humans: Once the most populous people in the empire, not the least because of official sanction and persecution of others, they are still common on Anteros. Descended from surviving tourists and employees, the culture and memory of the old empire is all but extinguished through time, decay, and the propagandistic efforts of the god-kings.
-Robots: Once ubiquitous to the point of invisibility across the old empire, not all robots were built equal. Most were quite dumb, operating only on assembly lines or meant to be tele-operated by human controllers, they always seemed poised to replace the vast majority of labour, but never quite did. In ebbs and surges they came and went, dismissed over fears of riots, the need to distract the proletariat with menial work, and a always present human supremacist memeplex. Anteros was one of the only places they were deliberately put in public facing roles, as props, and their complexity only grew. If any are truly sapient is hard to say, but they continue to act on the planet to this day. Some scavange parts to keep themselves operating, others are built new or new-ish by resilient and obscure automated factories.
-Mutants: A condescending word that the empire made sure kept bile in it's implications, mutants were and are a wide category, from the accidental to the deliberate. Treatment of "Genetic Deviants" in the Buchenen Stellar Empire... well, you can probably guess just by the wording they used. Across the star systems policy ranged from extermination (usually in the case of self-engineering) to brutal exploitation. Except on Anteros where there was another option, commercial and entertainment based exploitation. Entire populations were forcibly relocated to the world, able to live something like a real life... as long as they could be made to fit into a themed world, with the constant specter of implication hanging over them. As time went on, park management even began forcibly mutating other employees to fill out new areas. Today, their decedents wander the world.
-Aliens: Anteros never had that many alien visitors, the Empires relations with other, smaller xeno-polities were ever shifting and rarely more than frosty, but curious visits did happen. Most alien life on the rock was non-sapient (usually) wildlife imported for open air zoos and safari areas, some of which has died off, while others have gone to seed. A final, particularly grim group were those species subjugated by the Empire who had a few of their number forced to act as entertainment in small, manufactured communities. Still minorities in terms of population today, many have still adapted unexpectedly well to the new Anteros. Brutal as it can be, it is still a genuine promise of freedom.
-Mascots: While not there from the beginning, the Mascots eventually came to be emblematic of Anteros' image across the galaxy. Frustated with the limits (both practical and social) of robots, mutants, and aliens, the bloated dictatorship that was the resorts leadership eventually decided "wait, why don't we just make them from scratch?" Mascots were bespoke engineered organisms mass manufactured to resembles characters from the innumerable media properties Anteros owned and produced. Kept in cold storage most of their lives, techno-hypnotic techniques and implants were used to imprint characterization and false memories on them so they would be capable of both believing they were the character and interacting with guests. The Mascots proved hugely popular, not just with children, but also spawning new fetishes throughout adult fans, which management eventually decided to directly cater to. In the modern day, hidden production bunkers continue to autonomously monitor the Mascots active on the surface, whenever one becomes "inactive" in activates the next from storage, releasing another powerful, but confused soul into the world
