Little Kicks in Little Quentin
It was a quiet night in Prism City—as a matter of fact, it was pretty late at night, so not a lot of people were up. Boko sat on Quentin’s bed as he was waiting for him to return with some snacks.
“I’m back, Boko!” Quentin announced as he waddled into his bedroom.
Quentin returned holding plate full of snacks, he also had a hazelnut spread sandwich in his mouth. The plate had small crackers with cream cheese and raspberry chili sauce drizzled over it.
“I also got you some juice,” Quentin said, holding up a juice box. “I got you my favorite—fruit punch!”
“Aw, thanks, bud,” Boko responded. He then jumped into the air and hovered. “Say, lemme help you with that plate.”
Quentin handed over the plate, and Boko settled it down on the bed. Boko also got the juice and proceeded to settle down on the bed and drink it. Quentin got under the sheets.
“So, you have anything in mind?” Quentin asked as he grabbed the TV remote.
“Waddya mean?” Boko responded.
“If you wanna watch anything in particular, silly! We’re technically having a sleepover, so what’s a sleepover without a movie, am I right?”
“Ooh! Well, in that case, I’m not really sure. Guess you can pick somethin’ you like?”
Quentin chose a movie he liked, and Boko was intrigued with what he was watching. In between breaks, Quentin and Boko would talk about everyday things. Whenever Quentin needed something, like a bottle of water, Boko would gladly fetch it for him. They would even talk to Quentin’s baby, though the baby would only squirm and kick quite softly.
The two friends had finished everything in the plate halfway through the movie. Because Quentin finished his food, this had caused his baby to start moving. Quentin had gone into his third trimester, so he wasn’t expecting the baby to be moving so much at this point.
“Aw, did you like the snacks, Sunshine?” Quentin laughed.
The baby responded by moving a lot more in a flurry of kicks and squirms. Boko seemed to notice, so he put his ear up against Quentin’s belly. Aside from the occasional churns and gurgles coming from Quentin’s stomach and intestines digesting the food he ate, Boko could hear a faint heartbeat.
“Hehehehe,” Quentin giggled. “That tickles!” Heeheehee!”
The squirming didn’t get so cute as some time passed, since Quentin was starting to hurt a bit.
“Ow, ow,” Quentin winced as he patted his belly. “Okay, Sunshine, that’s enough. Give Daddy time to breathe, okay?”
Boko rubbed Quentin’s belly, hoping he could help ease the pain.
“Hey, Quentin?” Boko asked.
“Yeah, Boko?” Quentin responded as he looked down at the little dragon.
“Thanks for lettin’ me hunker down here ‘till I find a new place to live.”
“Anything for a friend,” Quentin smiled as he pet the top of Boko’s head.
As the movie ended, Quentin switched the TV off. Boko took the plate and flew off to the kitchen to drop it off in the sink. Once the little dragon returned, Quentin yawned—indicating that he was ready for bed. Quentin turned his bedside lamp off and curled up in his bed. Boko slept under the same sheet Quentin slept in. Before Quentin could fall asleep, he placed a hand on his belly.
“Goodnight, Sunshine,” Quentin whispered. “I love you.”
