Before working at the agency, James served in the navy. It was an eventful time — daily life and adventures on a naval vessel. During one of his voyages (his third year in the navy), he caught the attention of a man from the agency. This happened when the ship was attacked by a Kraken, and James had to use his fire abilities to save his comrades. He took a reckless and daring step — jumping straight into the giant creature's mouth. It seemed like the end for this sea wolf, and that's exactly what his comrades thought, until they saw and heard a thunderous explosion. The idiot detonated inside the Kraken like a bomb (surprisingly, he was able to do that as a fire mage). Most likely, it happened like this: he didn't have time to fall into the Kraken's stomach acid — instead, he acted instantly, heating up and triggering a fiery explosion from within the creature. His comrades had to fish him out of the sea, since he ended up in the water along with the remains of the monster. The fall into the ocean put out the flames on him as well.

There's another thing: on missions with Jose, when James has to push his firepower to the limit, he sometimes panics and runs to the nearest body of water to extinguish himself — just to avoid hurting his partner or civilians. That's because after using too much power, he becomes weaker and can't cool his body down properly.
