Autumn, 1431

A week later Oevcn was ready.

The dark cyno prepared himself, stripping down, caching his armor, weapons and supplies, and closing manacles around his wrists and ankles. With a deep breath, he snapped a collar around his neck, wincing as it snapped shut. The last time he had been in a state like this, the Overmountainers tried to burn him at the stake. It was very uncomfortable to say the least, but the Oevcn needed to get into the mines and find contacts that could help organize a breakout. Finally, the dark cyno picked up a pick, the last piece of his disguise, all collected from the body of an unfortunate slave the scouts had recovered in a gully near one of the encampments. Oevcn would rely on his speed and agility and infiltration to move through the hostile facilities, but if he was discovered or detected, it was better to fool his opponents into thinking that the dark cyno was just another slave and come with bindings he knew that he could escape out from.

Beimcu sat beside him atop the same mine shaft, quietly shaking her head.

&This was the plan that you came up with?&

&We need to let the slaves know about this breakout. We want to help them, not get them killed.&

&We both know this will get many of them killed. &

&Which is why I need to try to save as many lives as possible.&

&And you, Oevcn Burntfeet? Who may come to rescue you if things go wrong?&

The dark cyno turned to his companion. &I'll be fine.& He gave a massive grin. &And if something goes wrong, you'll make it fine.&

The tan, brown and gray agouti cyno sighed. &Well, I don’t know if I am able to, Oevcn.& She pleaded with her eyes. &I don't want to lose you.&

Oevcn hugged his companion. &I have faith in you.& Seeing Beimcu's look, the dark cyno finally added. &I’ll be careful.&

Then he hefted his pick over his shoulder and began scampering down the steep mound of tailings.

Behind him Beimcu called back.

&You'd better. I love you.&
