There were many vessels before my lamb. Narinder thought he could outsmart fate, just as he had managed to create a ritual to cheat death. However, fate is not a god, nor a domain to be controlled; it's a creature of unknowable mind and wicked sense of humor. With each attempt Narinder made of naming a new vessel to free himself, he could hear Fate laugh at the back of his mind after each failure. Fate would not let him escape, at least not under his own terms.
When at last my lamb arrived, any belief that he would be able to fight and win against the bishops was met with mockery and admonishment. After all, so many had tried and failed to free death from his chains over the last century. But then, Leshy was slain, and everything went downhill from there. For the bishops at least.
It took many decades for my lamb to defeat each one of the bishops. He died an unthinkable number of times and made many mistakes along the way. But in the end, they all fell to his sword, showing how fragile their control over their domain truly was.
Death is but a change, after all. And fate doesn't like stagnation.
