Today, it's the first day of national invasive species awareness week in the US again.
Last year I made some japanese barberry dragons. This year I made another design based on mile-a-minute (Persicaria perfoliata).
To be honest, mile-a-minute was a no-brainer to pick due to how geometrically inclined the plant is. It's easy to recognize (check out the triangle leaves and circle ochreas!) and it also makes for a unique design basis.
The eyes and pawpads are inspired by those numerous blue fruits they have (which are arranged in a cluster called a "raceme"). The recurved barbs that allow the plant to climb also made it into the design.
The photo in the background is by me. The small holes in the leaves are evidence of the mile-a-minute weevil which was introduced to the US to help control its spread.
If we see those holes when removing mile-a-minute, we have to shake the plants so that the weevils will leave and infest some new ones.
As before, it's not necessarily an evil character, because no species are inherently evil. It's just here to escape the confines of my hard drive (as these things do) and go on a lil' adventure.
