I was thinking recently, I wanted to try my own hand at experimenting with my own Pokemon-like collectable creatures but not trying to BE Pokemon; They are not meant to fit in the World of Pokemon, or exhibit the same pokemon mechanics, this is purely my own thing that is inspired off of Pokemon.
When coming up with a theme, I tried to think "What is something that interests me, and I would like to share my fascination of?" One thing pokemon does really well is if you go digging into the lore and design origins of various pokemon you can actually learn a lot about Science, Nature, World Cultures, History, and more, all packaged as a fun game about battling with monsters who are your friends. My first though was I could get a lot of designs out of all the various Mythical creatures that exist across the world, and I am very interested in sharing my love of mythology so I decided Mythical Creatures will be my theme!
This also presents a golden opportunity to reinvent my old "Myths" series. A while go I had a story I was working on the side about Mythical creatures living in secret in the modern world hidden among humanity...Problem though...It quickly became impossibly complicated trying to keep a coherent narrative going while trying to make every single world myth true, and exist along side one another without making Human history absolutely unrecognizable.
Also I really have trouble writing a contemporary when it feels like the Modern world is changing too fast to keep up with.
If I had to come up with a story to go with these creatures...this may not be the final concept but I was thinking some mad scientist was experimenting with Genetics and a Magical Element, and accidentally brought to life a bunch of creatures from mythology, then they all escaped and are wreaking havoc so he needs somebody to find and catch them.
Quetzalcoatl (Aztec Mythology)
Creature Type: Divine/Dragon
Domain: Sky/Light
Temperment: Approachable
This creature resembles the Legendary Feathered Serpent God known across Mesoamerica by many different names but is often called Quetzalcoatl by the Aztec or Kukulkan by the Mayans (I prefer Quetzalcoatl).
Quetzalcoatl is the God of: Light, Day, Sky, Wind, Weather, Rainbows, Knowledge, Peace, Mercy, Arts, Music, Craftsmanship, etc... He is a Patron of Artists, Craftsmen and the Priesthood, and was known for his benevolence and many gifts to humanity. He was said to have given Humanity life by mixing bones with his own blood, taught early humans about agriculture, math, astronomy, and music, and stole Corn, and Cocoa Beans so humans could feed themselves and enjoy the food of the gods. Being as Ubiquitous as he was across Mesoamerica Quetzalcoatl facilitated common ground across civilizations and cultures to engage is trade and brought people together so they might learn from one another and grow. Unlike many of the other deities in his own pantheon Quetzalcoatl was not worshiped with Human Sacrifices and was said to have been revolted by humans spilling other human's blood, after all he gave us his blood. Quetzalcoatl prefers smaller offerings like Food, Incense, Art, and pretty objects like Sea Shells. While preferring peace, Quetzalcoatl is no pushover being one of the oldest and strongest of the Aztec Gods. He is slow to provoke but passionate, so if you cross a line with him then his righteous anger could destroy the whole world.
One of his strongest feats of power was when a group of Star Goddesses killed his girlfriend, so he created a Hurricane and blew them all away explaining the shape of the Milky Way Galaxy.
