Xipe Totec (Aztec Mythology)
Creature type: Divine/Dragon
Domain: Earth
Temperament: Neutral
This Creature Resembles the Aztec god Xipe Totec, "Our Lord the Flayed One"
Xipe Totec is the God of: The cycle Seasonal Cylcle of Life, Death and Rebirth, Agriculture, Fertility, Vegetation, Earth, Gold and Silversmiths, Liberation, and Plagues. Every year come springtime, Xipe Totec would flay off his own flesh like a snake skin which would fertilize the earth for a good harvest representing the renewal of life. Over the course of the year he grows back his skin and the cycle starts all over, however if he is displeased with humanity, instead of bringing a good harvest year he can also be responsible for crop failure, disease, blight, and plague, and may require a sacrafice where a human is is flayed.
One story of the Aztec Empire's formation involved a ritual dedicated to Xipe Totec going horribly wrong and then very right! The Mexica (The tribe who would eventually become the Aztec Empire) asked the leader of another tribe who were the big boss at the time for his daughter, there was probably a huge misunderstanding between the two of them because he thought they wanted his daughter as a wife but they actually meant they were gonna sacrifice her to Xipe Totec and dance around in her flayed skin...her father was understandably pretty upset when he realized what they actually meant. The Mexica lost the battle and were exiles to a swamp in the middle of a lake where the leader of the other tribe thought they would all just die out. That little island soon became the capital of a triple alliance that we now know as the Aztec Empire, the last great empire of North America before those rotten Spaniards attacked! The City of Tenochtitlan was called the Venice of the New World by the Conquistadors because of just how beautiful it was and the grid of waterways through the city.
