It is instinctive, however, said instinct is not clear cut. At times they will be threatened and at times not. Like with any animal, it highly depends on their situation, territory and mating schedule. Given that they're not particularly gluttonous or material-driven, it's also hard to bribe them or gain their affection or trust.
