Go abstract if you need to! One thing important with backgrounds in character pieces is that the backgrounds are NOT the focus, so don't bother putting too much detail in them. People often get caught up on that, and sometimes make it so detailed it distracts from the character.
Life for example, a building could just be a grey thick line or a rectangle. Break things down to their bare basics and you will find yourself having a much easier time.
