The professor yawned. He breathed a sigh of relief as he looked out the window. The citizens who lived in the area that had been on lockdown for reconstruction had finally been okayed to return to their quarters. He, though, had spent some extra time at his hotel room to continue looking into his research into the file he had procured.
The extra time had paid off, as in that time, he had managed to find exactly what he needed: a unique device that could transfer data from a floppy disk to a drive, a device that strangely wasn’t sold in regular office stores in town, most likely because most didn’t need such a thing, as no one used floppies anymore.
But he had taken time to search into where he could get one, found an online seller, bought it for a reasonable price, and even had it delivered to the hotel under his name. Of course, he had to let the hotel staff know ahead of time and to call him when it arrived. It was the only way it could be done since no packages could be delivered to his quarters during the reconstruction period. It was fortunate for him that the hotel staff was lenient enough to understand this.
And so the device was finally his, and there it sat, on the table. At last, the file could be extracted onto modern hardware, and he could finally share his findings with…
BUZZ. BUZZ.
His phone buzzed. His thoughts were interrupted as he felt the tingle of the buzzing phone in his pocket. ‘Bother’, he thought, rolling his eyes. He was about to grab his phone to make a call anyway. He figured he might as well check this right quick before proceeding with said call.
His phone KEPT buzzing over and over, as he was receiving text messages in force. The professor was little irritated. He looked to see who they were coming from, and was surprised to see that they were coming from one of his assistants. Raising his brow, he open the contact and read the texts in order.
“You’re in danger!”
An audio recording of some sort came next, followed by…
“Don't come here! They’re looking for you!”
The professor froze, sweating. What was his assistant talking about?
Then he looked at the audio recording. He was afraid to, but he knew he had to listen to it. Gulping, he pressed it, and let it play. He could hear two voices, somewhat distant, indicating that his assistant who had recorded this was not near them, which itself indicated that he must’ve been eavesdropping. He listened closely…
“What do you MEAN compromised?!”
“You heard me! Someone found it!”
“Ugh… I knew that data should’ve been deleted!”
“Why wasn’t it?”
“In case the project was ever continued. It was the only record of its data we had. We didn’t allow the data to be copied for anyone involved. It was too risky to us and the entire institution… and now you’re telling me someone found it?”
“Yes, and they stole it too. The file’s not there anymore!”
“WHAT?! But... That machine is too old! Are you implying that the thief brought a floppy?”
“If I may?”
(The professor jumped when he heard this third voice, recognizing it as another one of his assistants.)
“What is it?”
“I think I know EXACTLY who took it."
"Who?"
"My superior…”
“Wha… HIM?! What makes you so sure?”
“Call it a hunch, but he’s been distant ever since he started regularly meeting with that scythe lizard girl.”
“… Did you say scythe lizard?”
“Yes, you know. That big blue desert scythe lizard I told you about! The one who’s way too big for her type and keeps complaining about it! I swear, the nerve of…”
“… Find him.”
“Hm?”
“Your professor. If he's had the file for this long, we must assume he knows too much, and he must not be allowed to talk... GET him...”
“But… he’s one of our best researchers. He's too essential! That's a waste!”
“Yes, and it’s too bad that he got himself pulled into this, but the information in that file must not get out… It would ruin the institution...”
“Hmph... all right... So what will we do then? Hire someone? You know that won’t work. Someone else tried that on an L&S agent last month, and the ones they hired were effortlessly thwarted by a pissed off long neck...”
“Leave it to me. I have a better idea.”
“What?”
“I have... connections, you see. I know just the kind of asset we need, and I won't make the same mistakes they made-”
“Shhh! … Is someone outside my office?”
The audio recording concluded with a gasp before abruptly cutting off.
The professor breathed heavily, his heart pounding, his body shaking, his face pale. He couldn’t believe it. This secret he had stumbled upon was even bigger than he thought. Was it some kind of conspiracy connected to the institution? He still didn't know what this was just yet. All he knew was he had been ratted out, and by one of his own assistants. What now? He knew someone had to have been sent after him by now, but who? Who was he supposed to look out for? He wished the recording hadn’t cut off before he could hear that vital information.
He took a deep breath. Deep down, he felt he might've known this was inevitable the moment he found that file. He shouldn't have been so surprised. This was a dangerous move he had made.
But he couldn't just ignore it.
There was only one thing he could do now, and that was to make the call he was about to make in the first place, but of course, with more urgency now. He knew this was risky, but he also knew it was the only way to both protect himself and the information he acquired.
Abequa yawned. She had gotten a somewhat late start to the day, but at least it was a start. She had been feeling pretty normal, having not been thinking too hard about mysteries and instead taking it easy whilst going about her usual routine.
The scythe lizard had just finished getting dressed when Sherazade shuffled in. "Good morning, Abby!" she said in a cheery tone. "Not used to seeing you get up after me." She chuckled.
Abequa snorted. "G'morning, Sherry," she said. "Yeah, I kind of got up last night, so my sleep got a little skewed."
"Oh..." said Sherry. "No bad dreams or anything, right?"
"Well..." Abequa began. "It wasn't a nightmare, but it was weird. I had a dream about me going all... kaiju mode and ripping up the city for some reason."
Sherazade chuckled. "I get those dreams too sometimes. It's strange."
"Eh, well, maybe that's what happens when the small scales see us as exactly that," Abequa said half-jokingly.
"Mmm..." Sherazade said knowingly. "Well, maybe a little breakfast'll shake off the dream funk."
"Maybe," Abequa said as the two stepped outside into the morning sun, shuffling past the "shrubs" out front, which were actually entire trees, reaching only as high as their legs. The trees shook and bent as they shuffled past them, like tall grass blades, only with more bark than actual grass.
"So what do you have a taste for?" Sherazade asked.
"Well-" Abequa didn't have a change to even think of an answer before she felt something tingling in her pocket, accompanied by a faint buzz. "Augh..." she grunted. "Who's calling me this early?" Abequa grabbed her phone from her pocket, looking at the caller ID. She jumped when she saw who it was. "Oh... it's him..."
Sherazade gasped. "Uh-oh... so today's the day?"
"Perhaps..." Abequa said. She took a deep breath. "Whoo boy, I'm nervous, but here we go..." She answered the phone. "Hello?"
"Miss Abby!" the professor's voice sounded from the phone. "Thank goodness! Have I caught you at a bad time?"
"Uh... not really?" Abequa replied. "Hadn't really gotten a chance to make any plans for the morning just yet." Abequa knew what it usually meant when the professor asked her that question. That meant he found something and she needed to go up there. "What's up? Do you want to meet again?"
"Y-yes! At once!" the professor began, his voice quivering slightly, something that didn't go unnoticed by Abequa. "Listen, I... I found something, but I need to talk to you in private, immediately."
"O-oh..." replied Abequa, "'Kay then. I'll head up to the lab in a-"
"NO! DON'T GO THERE! PLEASE DON'T GO THERE!!" the professor suddenly yelled, startling Abequa and prompting her to yank the phone away from her ear in reflex. Sherazade couldn't immediately hear what exactly was being said, but she heard the professor's voice screech through the phone even from a short distance. The Stego wanted to shuffle closer, but stayed where she was, preferring not to eavesdrop.
"G-geez, dude!" Abequa was stupified. She wasn't expecting that kind of response. "Breathe!" She could hear the professor breathing heavily and shakily. She started to feel scared herself, as she had never heard him sound this frightened.
"Err, f-forgive me..." the professor said, catching his breath.
"It's fine," said Abequa in a calm voice, trying to soothe the professor. "Just... what's going on?"
"Look," the professor explained. "I... I can't go to the institution. It's not safe... Long story short, I... I found something that I apparently wasn't supposed to find. I took it, and I've spent weeks trying to find a way to extract it, but... they figured out that I have it, and... and they might've sent someone looking for me."
Abequa was hoping this was just an exaggeration, but deep down she could feel it wasn't. "Uh... are you sure you're not just paranoid? How do you know you're being hunted?"
"Miss Abby, it's true! One of my assistants overheard the conversation and told me. He recorded the whole thing!"
Abequa's face turned pale. "But... but why would they act so drastic? What did you even find?"
"Something far too deep for me to just lay out over the phone. It's really better if I show you. which is why I need to meet with you before someone... impedes me."
Abequa did NOT like the way the professor said "impede". She kept herself composed as best as she could and continued to ask questions. "... Well, where even ARE you? Are you at your house or whatever?"
"No. I haven't been able to return to my quarters since that Brachiosaurus incident a few weeks ago." Abequa cringed, since she knew who the Brachiosaurus in question was. The professor continued. "My quarters are in that zone. Even without that inconvenience, I shouldn't go there right now anyway, in case they sent someone to my address. I feel that'd be the first place they'd look..."
"W-well then..." Abequa said. "What if I come and get you?"
"That would be perfect, if you can spare the room."
"Eh, not like you'd take up any room here anyway," Abequa mused.
"Even better! Now uh... are you alone?"
"Well, no. Sherry's still here with me. That's not an issue is it?"
"Sherry...? Oh, that's right. Your mate, correct? I remember you mentioning her a few times."
Abequa blushed. "Err... ROOMmate, and also sister, but... I guess 'mate' isn't TOO inaccurate." Abequa looked at Sherazade, who snickered, also blushing.
"Well, if you trust her then I suppose it's fine if she hears this, too," said the professor. At this, Abequa put the call on speaker, allowing Sherazade to hear whatever was left. Sherazade shuffled closer.
"Anyway, tangent aside," the professor continued. "I'm not at my quarters. I'm temporarily staying at a hotel. I never disclosed to them where I was staying, so they don't know I'm here, I hope anyway... Honestly, for all I know they could be searching every hotel in town for any reservation records involving me. I know that sounds like a stretch, but I'm on edge at the moment... Ahem, anyway, I'll send you the hotel address after I hang up. Please get here soon, Miss Abby! I don't know what's next and to be honest my objectivity is barely doing me any good..."
"All right then, Prof," Abequa said. "Stay in your room until I get there. Don't open your door for ANYBODY, okay?"
"No need to tell me twice. I'll see you soon..."
He hung up. As Abequa waited for the address to be sent to her, Sherazade expressed worry. "I uh... didn't hear most of that, but... is he okay?"
Abequa sighed. "I need to go make sure he STAYS okay," she said.
"Should I come, too?" Sherazade asked.
"Eh, I don't think it's necessary," Abequa said, as the address popped up on her phone. "I'll be right back. After all, he wants to show me this ASAP... Oh, and in private, so maybe we shouldn't eat out this time anyway..."
"Oh, well in that case," Sherazade said. "I guess I can maybe cook up a little something for breakfast if we're gonna have a lil' guest! I'll have it ready when you two get here. Lemme know if you need me!" The Stego giggled as she headed back inside. "I hope he likes my conifer pancakes!"
Abequa chuckled slightly as she watched Sherazade head back into their quarters, squeezing through the tight door. It wasn't as up to date as the apartments the small scales had (mainly due to a lack of building materials for large scales, and even then, she and Sherazade were bigger than normal even for largies), but it served its purpose well enough.
Abequa didn't know what she was about to learn, so she preemptively braced herself as she headed for the small district. 'What did he find that would get the whole lab on his butt...?' she asked herself.
Happy Macro March! I figured this was the perfect time to finally continue the next leg in THIS mystery.
The professor's being hounded for taking a confidential file. Abequa's his only hope.
I doubt I'll finish this before the month is over (partially due to TFF), so I won't try. I want to take this slower anyway and make sure it cooks enough. I feel like I rushed with the best/worst day ever installments, and I don't want to rush this one especially. Besides, it'll help me psychologically (since I still can't stop myself from going full cel and soft shade mode whenever I do a personal work).
Enjoy!
