There's only so much variation you can give them. Sure, they have a few different face and body shapes and colors, but have you seen all these species, genera, tribes, families, orders, classes, phyla, kingdoms, and domains of animals that we have? There's just no contest.

I thought a lot of people use animals in their comics because a animal and vote certain thoughts or traits so that you wouldn't need to explicitly show them over over again for the reader to think okay this person's probably like this or this person's probably like that. Like loyalty with canines Grace and dexterity with felines speed with rabbits and don't forget rabbits are strong those kicks can do some real damage

It also adds a different level of recognizability. I saw a clip of a genet grooming itself recently (adorable), and immediately thought of you and your art. I would only get that kind of recognition with people, if they look like someone I'm close to (i.e. my brother) or someone so famous/infamous that it's practically impossible to not know what they look like (i.e. Keanu Reeves).
