One of my favorite bits in Understanding Comics is when he riffs off of The Treachery of Images:
"This is not a pipe."
And, of course, it's not a pipe: it's a painting of a pipe.
Well, actually, it's a drawing of a painting of a pipe.
Really it's a printed copy of a drawing of a painting of a pipe.
Ten copies if you count the panels on both pages here.
Do you hear what I'm saying?
If so, get your ears checked, because these pages haven't made a sound.
The fact that I managed to catch him at the one Canadian stop on his '50 States' tour is still something I am very glad happened.
