Here are a a couple of handy clips that I have made to hold a variety of things.
They are made from coils of annealed coat hanger wire that I have quite the abundant amount of.
The zinc was first stripped off the wire in a bath of hydrochloric acid and then they were roughly straightened and and then coiled around a steel tube before tossing into a fire to let them heat up and cool slowly in the ashes over a few hours.
This rendered the wire totally pliable and easy to bend and thusly was shaped into the clip-hooks.
They were then heated to a bright red nearing and orange colour and quenched in water while they were open.
Mild steel may not have a lot of carbon in it, but it does do something when quenched in water. They became stiff and no longer pliable. They retain their shape after being bent- taking on a characteristic known as "Springiness"
They were left untempered, no additional heating to draw a temper to a blue like one would normally do with actual alloys of spring steel.
