Someguy Sketches 215 - Historical Dates
Gabby and Caddie aren't each others' first loves; Gabby dated once before, while Caddie has had four different partners. In order:
1. On April 3, 1879, while Caddie was working on a farm, he (she at the time) began secretly seeing another farmhand, Lois Vera. They managed to keep it a secret for the year and four months they were together, but it ended when Lois cheated on Caddie with the farm's owner.
2. Two years later, Caddie met Penny Dooley, a smooth newt that emigrated from Ireland. They began dating on Valentine's Day 1883, and got so close that they symbolically married each other on May 17, 1886. The next 15 years were amazing, but unfortunately, Penny developed lung cancer and died on August 1, 1901.
3. It took 11 years for Caddie to feel up to dating again, eventually choosing Cameron Gonzalez, a banker who'd recently broken off a short relationship. They spent six rocky months together, before Cameron learned that he'd gotten his previous love pregnant, and he left to be with her again. After that, Caddie decided to take a break for a couple decades, to figure himself out.
4. After figuring out he was trans, but before deciding he actually wanted to transition, he decided to rejoin the dating scene. On August 3, 1997, he began a short-lived relationship with Victor Franklin, the owner of a local bowling alley that Caddie used to frequent. They dated for 15 days before Caddie let slip that he was thinking about transitioning, at which point Victor dumped him. Victor is still alive to this day, and still harasses Caddie whenever they happen to cross paths.
5. Gabby's first relationship started in her senior year of high school. She was just beginning to figure out her sexuality, and decided to test the waters with Denise Hennessy, a jerboa in her gym class. They dated in secret from November 2, 2015 to April 6, 2016, during which time, Gabby helped Denise get away from her abusive brother Logan. They eventually decided that they weren't compatible long-term, and amicably broke it off, remaining friends to this day.
6. On May 28, 2020, Caddie was denied from getting onto a roller coaster due to height requirements. As he sulked on a bench, Gabby sat down to readjust her leg, and they began making small talk. They decided to get tacos at the truck Alyssa worked at, and became fast friends. It took until August 27 for Gabby to ask Caddie out, and they've been dating in secret since.
This was a really fun exercise in drawing period-accurate clothes (or, in Penny's case, no clothes at all because it's the same decade as the previous relationship), while at the same time fleshing out lore I've been developing for a while.

Well, 3 failed relationships; him and Penny worked out until she died.
And most people in this universe know that certain species (dragons, dinosaurs, tortoises, etc.) live for much longer than others, so Gabby's reaction to Caddie's age was less "HUH!? Are you serious?!?! 🤯" and more "Woah, really? You don't look a day over 27! What was it like back then?"
Her reaction to finding out he's a symbolic widow, on the other hand, was mostly her going something like "Damn, that's dark. I'm so sorry for your loss", and him replying something like "I still miss her, but it's in the past."
