Meet Clarity, my first ever character! She’s a healer who loves travelling the world, using her magical gifts to fix people up.
People make a ton of Pokemon and Digimon OCs, and they’re great, everyone knows that… But there’s another video game series that deserves attention too! Dragon Quest has a ton of great monster designs, and the Hades Condor has always been one of my favorites. So I figured, hey, why not contribute to a franchise lacking in fanart by using one of its creatures as a launching point?
This lady wouldn’t quit gnawing at my brain, and I just had to ask
Aqr for his help in bringing her to life. He doesn’t take commissions other than emotes very often, but when I approached him with this idea, he was interested enough to try his hand at some design work. I couldn’t be happier with the result, seriously.
Go follow
Aqr, he’s a pretty cool guy! If you ever need emotes, like for Discord or Twitch, he’s got a serious passion for those. This guy knows how to make a quality product, and it was a genuine joy tossing ideas back and forth whenever he sent progress updates on this refsheet. He deserves your money!
Like all Hades Condors, Clarity naturally has an affinity for Cure-all powers. Thanks to her parents devoting their experience to healing and several other support skills, she was born with exceptional talent for white magic. Her abilities are as follows:
Cure-all: Mid to high level healing spells, including the ability to clear most status ailments. Not the best healing magic in the world, but proven capable as a serious boon to any adventuring party.
Smarty-Pants: A mix of some offensive magic, low level healing, and several buffs that can automatically apply to the bearer and their partners. With enough experience in this, the bearer’s mana regenerates quickly without the need for potions, and it even grants insulation from fire and ice breath attacks. (Yes, there is genuinely a talent tree in the Dragon Quest games called Smarty-Pants. It's an incredibly dumb name, but it’s actually one of the best skills for spellcasters.)
Defense Booster IV: Pure armor. Investing in this talent will grant the bearer incredible damage reduction from physical attacks. It doesn’t increase HP or defend against magic, though, so those will still be a threat without extra precautions.
Thanks to these three skills and her avian heritage, Clarity is a fast, nimble, and durable cleric. Her capability in using attack magic, however, is far from impressive. She enjoys healing more than anything and will only resort to Frizzles and Kabooms (granted by the Smarty-Pants talent) in times of desperation, and even then, there’s a good chance she’ll get caught in the blast herself.
In the same vein, her upper arm strength is quite lacking, and it’s unlikely that swinging her staff at a monster will do much real damage. Her best bet is to stand back and let others do the fighting while she takes care of mid-combat injuries from a distance. Fitness-wise, Clarity’s legs are far more exercised than her wings. Hidden under that feather coat are some toned muscles, and she can run, jump, duck and dodge like nobody’s business. If escape is the only option, there’s no way she’ll get left in the dust.
Her training since childhood was mostly concerned with her talent for healing, but as soon as Clarity showed an interest in adventuring, her whole community made an effort to teach her as much self-defense as she could handle and to get her in excellent shape. Her father, working as a blacksmith, even forged a lightweight bronze staff as tall as she was because he was so worried about leaving her unarmed. Her skill with weapons and offensive fighting in general was… kind of pathetic, but her inherited hardiness, agility and sheer power for healing was enough to safely go off on her own.
Clarity’s intrigue for venturing out of her hometown was, in part, motivated by the prospect of wealth. Despite being raised and taught by modest churchgoers like her mother, she has always been fascinated by shiny, valuable items like gemstones and gold coins. She even took the time to learn some of the finer things about appraising and setting jewelry, which is how she bejeweled her own necklace at a young age with a few family heirlooms. One might say she’s a little greedy, honestly; but fret not! Filling her coffers would be all well and good, but her end goal is to bring whatever she can back to invest in her hometown’s future… leaving some for her own splurging, of course.
Personality-wise, Clarity doesn’t like looking down on people (ironic in the literal sense, considering she’s noticeably taller than the average woman). She tries to be modest, but she can be a bit of a showoff under the right circumstances. All her life, her community made it clear that she’s talented and beautiful, and that pride gets to her head sometimes. She understands that not everyone is lucky enough to be endowed with magic like hers, though. In her mind, harnessing that power to better the world is what matters most, and the best way to do that is to travel around offering her healing services… all while raking in some cash and feeling appreciated for it along the way.
All in all, Clarity makes a competent member of any party, as long as they don’t put her in the front lines. Theoretically, she could tank some pretty big hits, but she’d prefer to keep her distance and dodge as much harm as she feasibly can. It’d be such a shame to get her feathers all messed up, after all; she likes to preen herself every day, for lord’s sake!
Okay, wall of text over. If you bothered to read that, hey, thanks. I’m excited to finally have a character of my own after more than fifteen years of being a furry. I love this lady already and I wanna get her as much art as she deserves in the future.
