Zelda, by observing the crew’s routines, avoiding their advances, and allowing herself to be seen as little more than an exotic animal, quietly learns their languages and ways. Her uneasy equilibrium shatters when Rafique, the slaver who once tormented her, boards the ship, and Zelda seizes the chance to confront her past by killing him publicly and declaring his debt “paid in full.” Though the captain is angered by the unauthorized killing, Zelda asserts her prior claim. She submits to his authority, enduring public punishment to affirm his control and secure the crew’s acceptance. Ultimately, she is acknowledged as part of the ship’s order when she gives her name—Zelda—and formally binds herself to the crew by signing the ship’s log, marking a turning point from hunted captive to feared, grudgingly respected member of the pirate world.
