Wild Cards: Jack and Ace, Part 24
Ice cracked along the solid floor, building up around the people trapped in ice. The only one visibly moving was Frostbite. A fox deeply clothed in waterproof gear that was made for harsh conditions. Through his mask, he was looking around, “Lightshow? Lightshow!” Some coughing was heard, and he ran toward it. He found the cat, trying to push off a man who was laying on top of her. With his help, they laid the many on discarded rags. “Thank goodness, you’re okay.”
“Thanks to you.” Lightshow said, “That ice power turned out real handy.”
“Yeah,” Frostbite looked at the frozen people, “This is gonna leave them hurting until the cops get them free, but I think they earned it.”
“Maybe.” Lightshow said, then her eyes went wide as she ducked for the ground. Frostbite backed up, surprised by this, and it was just enough. A gunshot was heard, and the round struck the ice between them. Both of them ran for cover as another two shots rang out.
“You both are going to pay for all this!” It was the lioness, the one who was still in the oversight office. “When we’re done here, you’ll be our next hit! No one is throwing us aside after this!”
Lightshow listened from her cover, but then looked over to Frostbite, “Stay low, I’ve got this mad cat.” She grabbed a piece of metal off the ground, and threw it. The next shot metal, and Lightshow ran from cover. She ran for the office, dodging the next few shots the lioness took at her. She clicked her heels, and fired the last set of rockets she had. Another shot, just misses her, while she leaps right for the office windows. She went through the window she broke before, and kicked the gun out of the lioness’ hands. The lion swiped her claws again and again, but Lightshow just kept dodging as she bobbed and weaved around the lioness. The rabbit seemed to be packing up the case, and devices from before, they really were going to leave. Lightshow lit another firecracker, but then threw it over her shoulder as the lioness tried to attack again. The firecracker landed in the suitcase, and the rabbit saw that, panicked, he opened it again. He tried to grab the firework before it went off, but Lightshow stepped away from the lioness and shoved him over. Landing on the suitcase and firework, it contained the blast that sparked more than it should. The rabbit cried out in pain as he rolled off the burning tech, chest fur smoking.
The lioness watched stunned, eyes shifting between her accomplice and the smoking suitcase, “That was everything. Everything we worked for, everything we had. Our pride and effort.”
“Shouldn’t have forced it then.” Lightshow said, “Get a job and work up like the rest of the world.” checking her pockets.
Her eyes turned back on Lightshow again, with a glare, “We had a job…”
